Dougie~ I'll post a full comparison. Remember, my bikes are lowered (or will be) so they handle a bit differently.

First I think that any women that ride bikes are cool, the sport needs more participation from the better half. It makes it better yet that you've chosen another SV.:niceone:
But I have to admit, when I saw the title of this thread, I honestly thought "no way, that doesn't seem like something she'd do". But I had to look anyways. Thanks for the surprise.:niceone: :niceone: And please do let us know your impressions as I am trying to get my better half interested. Which she is, but my SV1kS is way to much for her riding skills at this point. That and Naples isn't the place for a newbie to start learning.
ENjoy the new bike

Thanks everybody for the congrats  This one is going to be my play bike. The 1000 isn't forgiving enough to push too hard when you're still a beginner.
Thirrteen ~ IMO This is the best beginner bike. Your better half would love it. Although, you're right about scarey traffic, it's the most intimmidating thing when you're learning. Trailer it out to somewhere she can ride comfortably to build confidence. Best of luck to her!

Congrats on the new bike. You'll love it. It will seem smaller, quieter and smoother but it's still a pretty quick bike. I had one of those that I sold a few months after buying my 1K and I kind of wish that I'd kept it.
I sold it to a guy in Orlando and I swear it's the one that "ride naked" has.
Don't fall tooooo much in love with it and ignore the 1K.
Enjoy it.

That's what the current plan is. The point of contention that I'm or "we" are faced with know is which bike. Of course I would like her to start on a SV650 for all the obvious reasons. Same brand, easier to learn on, vast amount of replacement parts, small and relatively light, no massive power spikes in the motor to deal with, relatively cheap to insure etc. But the 650's that I've found over here are already track bikes and they're thrashed. We've tried out a few Honda Hawks a early 90's CBR600 a Suzuki GS500 and the like. Thing is my wife is just 5'1" tall so the seat to ground ratio is a little troublesome. Of course there are lowering kits for these bikes but right now we're still in the research phase.
More than likely she'll end up with a Suzuki, Aprilia or Honda 250 two stroke. Those fit her body better without going into the suspension mods. And they still have enough performance potential for growth and they aren't difficult to ride if you respect the abilities of the bike.
Hopefully by spring, if I'm still in country we can have this dilemma sorted. But without hijacking any further than I already have, best of luck with the 650N and let us know how it goes for you.
Keep the rubber side down.

Ahh the joy of owning two bikes. I wouldn't know. The title of this thread was a cruel joke. I'd like to get a 650 myself since I'm a beginner. It just ain't in the cards right now. Cool choice. Make sure and post pictures of you throwing it around the track.

I didn't know she rides! You never tell me anything :bleh:
Make sure you get some good sliders on her.Already on my list :niceone: She's stock, so my list is becoming quite long. Aaaaak! I'm modding 2 bikes now!
If you don't mind me askin', what was the damage $$$???
Im looking for the same bike for the track. :second:Here's the Kelly Blue Book list for retail in good condition:
2000 = $3,585
2001 = $3,970
2002 = $4,195
2003 = $4,555
That should give you a ball-park figure to work with. Mileage is also a factor. Mine was well maintained and in excellent condition. He babied her! :baby:The end was broken off of the right brake lever, so he has a new brake and clutch lever (so they match) for me. He also threw in a rearstand, which I needed anyway. Let's just say, it was a good enough deal that I wrote a check on the spot.

It's simple, type:
[ quote=Person's Name ] and whatever their text is. At the end, you just place the end quote or
Take the spaces out of the first part for it to work. I put them in so it wouldn't create the box.
I'll give you a call tonight.

When snipping (editing down) a quote, it is easy to delete the end quote. You have to be carefull to only delete the stuff in the middle and not those special charachters that start and end the quote. or you get something like this:
I cant get my quotes to work right on this forum.
I picked her up last night and made it back to Venice by 8:00. I knew she had a slight oil leak, so first things were to replace a couple gaskets, change the oil and replace the clutch lever.
I knew the tires were worn and I planned on replacing them right away, but I thought I may be able to ride on them a little. A closer look changed my mind. This guy was riding on a plugged tire
She still needs some more work, handlebars, brake lever and lowering links. By the time I have tires, I should have everything else done too.

I picked one up last night too, and had her back to my place by 7:45 ( I'm a slick operator ). Looked like she had a slight leak, well there was a damp patch near the crutch. She grabbed my lever and I nearly blew a gasket I can tell you.
She looked a bit worn out and I thought about replacing her straight away but guessed I might as well have a quick ride on her first.
A closer look changed my mind, this girl was too tired as she'd been well plugged by some previous owners.
She needed some work doing to her, if she'd been a bike you'd say the twin head lights were hanging down near her belly pan, so I said I was too tired and had loads else to do instead.

Today I put the lowering links on her :supsmiley I had a bit of help from a friend that lowered her by realeasing the straps to the ceiling so I could center the bolts. Oh, in case anyone is lowering a pre-2003 650N, if you pick up the links from 58cycle.com, THEY LIE! The first position is NOT STOCK! Second position is a 2.5" drop! I put them on in second position and had about a 2" clearance to the tire when sitting on her  She was lower than my Buell! She even looked funny and it would have taken an inch drop in the forks to level her out. I put it up to the stock position (actually it's a 1.5" drop!) and it was perfect. Although I needed to grind a bit off the links to achieve the desired angle since they were too long and wouldn't fit correctly.
I tried her out in a group ride going out for sushi. She handles FANTASTIC! Turns are a lot easier than the 1000, although turns on the 1000 are easier than on the Buell! The power difference is disappointing. :disapint: Also, since she's naked, the seat position is very different. Perhaps I'll pick up some rearsets to shift the pegs back a bit.
Other than all that, she's a sweet ride. I'll give her the true test tomorrow morning ... oh, make that today when we take her out to 'Area 51'. It's a cyclist's dream. An entire development with only roads, no houses built because of EPA laws and NO TRAFFIC! I can't wait to see what "Little Sis" can do! :niceone:

how many of us bought our 1000's after we had a 650 to learn on? That is a true testament to the holding power of the SV. the first time I saw a 1000 I was like "I have got to ride that" I was truly excited to find out how it pulled from low. Congrats on liking the "little sis" , just wish I would have held on to mine! At one time or another, a while ago, when i was shopping for mods, I found a big bore kit for the "little one" , that pushed it to either a 750 or 900. (Now where did that go...........) :niceone:

I tried her out in a group ride going out for sushi. She handles FANTASTIC! Turns are a lot easier than the 1000, although turns on the 1000 are easier than on the Buell! The power difference is disappointing. :disapint: Also, since she's naked, the seat position is very different. Perhaps I'll pick up some rearsets to shift the pegs back a bit.
It's really funny to discover a little sister and that's why 650 is so popular here in France. 650 has all the cards in the hand and has nothing to envy of his big sister (I don't know if I'm clear here but nevermind) :)

how many of us bought our 1000's after we had a 650 to learn on? hear, hear.
i loved my li'l sv650; her name was Zipper & she was sooooooooo much fun on a track. i raced her for a couple of seasons, then had a huge money crunch & had to sell her to make the mortgage. broke my heart to do that. :(
so...
when i decided to build an Adventure Touring bike, the sv650 was #1 on my list. i went to a boneyard to check out several SVs for sale, & guess what? there sat Ratbike, my future nekkid sv1000, looking all forlorn like nobody loved him. i thought, "nah, i want a 650 -- lighter weight, better for fireroads." then the yard attendant insisted on having me start up Ratbike's engine...
sold. :)
 didn't mean to threadjack, TC. been reading your latest venture with much interest. congrats on obtaining yet another bike (it's a disease, y'know :)). i'm sure you'll really learn to appreciate the balance of a 650 -- it's not so overwhelming, like the 1000, which sometimes seems to be all engine & little else. i think the smaller SV is a better-balanced package in that regard.

We headed down to Area 51 about 8:30 this morning. We had a track Ninja in the back of a truck since it's not street legal and the rest of us rode. The main reason this trip being organised was to test out the Ninja. My mechanic friend is rebuilding it. The Ninja will come into play later.
It was a pleasant ride with very little traffic all the way there. We arrive and find a couple places with excessive road debris. Two of the guys went ahead to move a tree out of the road and clear the other areas while we unloaded the track bike. We were given a full report of where the road was partially blocked and where the sandy areas were.
Time to ride. We'd ride a couple loops and check back in every so often to see how everyone was doing. I was about to take her back out with the intention of seeing trip digits on the speedo for the first time. This was it, the perfect safe place away from traffic! I'm backing her up and she feels really heavy, as if she weighs more than the 1000. I thought it was because I was tired ..... then one of the guys waved me down to stop right before I pulled out. My rear tire was FLAT! We found the hole, a puncture right in the center of the tire. :wallbash:
The rest of the guys finished up their laps and we were ready to head out.
The problems: two bikes that can't be ridden (Ninja - NOT legal & SV650 - flat tire) only 1 will fit in the truck, 20 mile trip!
The solution: I will first apologise to all police officials on this site! This was the safest solution. You guessed it, somebody rides the Ninja! Picture this, TC in the lead driving the truck with her SV in the back. Directly centered behind her, a neon green race bike with rider in full leather race suit. (not too obvious! ) Two riders just behind him on either side two more directly behind them, all in street gear. Everyone's doing the speed limit and keeping in a close pack. As soon as we pull out on the main road, there's a :pcplod: :sweatdrop He didn't notice, and niether did the other 3 we passed along the way. Amazingly enough, we made it back uneventfully!
We're planning on going again fairly soon. Now we have a better idea of what to expect and what to bring .... yes, patch kit and air compressor are on the list
Sorry Pete, no pictures. We were all having too much fun! :supsmiley

So, TC which do you like better the 650 or 1K?I love them both in their own special way.
The thou is perfect for riding out of town to unpopulated roads for long country rides where you get the chance to open her up and enjoy! I'm keeping her at my friend's place in Venice since we do that on weekends there.
The 650 is perfect for maneuvering through the congested traffic here on the peninsula. It's at least a 45 minute ride to open roads around here, so I'll be keeping her here at home.
Two different bikes for two different types of riding. I have the best of both worlds!

It is in Iowa! You must have at least liability!
Just think if you were at a stop light and you rev the engine to much dump the clutch the bike takes off and hits a pedestrian! Now your liable for that!

There are those that believe jetting is an adjustment, not a modification.
Also, this type of grouch tends to believe that bolting on anything commercially available and off the shelf is not a mod either.
Such curmudgeons say that it aint a mod unless it invovles a Sawzall, grinder, mill, lathe, and a TIG welder.
The metal demolition required to stuff a VFR swingarm into the SV frame, and actually have the shock and sprocket end up in the right place, would be a mod.
Kids these days, the only tool they know how to use is a credit card. :pokey:

You don't see nearly as many men on their cell while driving, around here we do.
that, along with shaving, or reading a map, or...
besides, i think the statistics still indicate that men are worse (that is, more accident-prone) drivers.

Today when I arrived in Venice to finish my 650 I found out that she was already done  My mechanic friend bought a new brake line bleeder and couldn't wait to try it out. Since the choke cable was the only important thing left, he replaced that too.
Four of us went out for a short ride tonight after dinner. It was a beautifully cool evening and the ride was just pleasant.
I'll be bringing her home next week and I can't wait!!!
I still need to change the fork oil, but that's something that can wait. Right now, I want to forget about doing mechanic work and just ride her for a while.

Bad news mate  How many miles have you done? Shouldn't have trashed the bearings so soon - is it still under warranty? Let me know if you need any help picking the bike up.
Oops, hijacking TC's thread - gonna be in trouble now!! :doctor:

So how did your wheel bearings go out so soon?
Lots of miles?
The bearings aren't that expensive and labor shouldn't kill you because it all comes apart pretty easily!

Funnily enough it was riding pillion that got me really hooked on bikes. I'd always liked the idea of having a bike then a mate stared taking me on the back of his. I thought that was fun so wanted to try being the one in control. Haven't looked back since, cheers Jim! :niceone: I will say that the rider makes a HUGE difference to the pillion experience...

I took the advice from this site about cleaning exhaust. I picked up two kinds of metal polish and started cleaning .... hmmm, a 2000 bike that has never had its' exhaust cleaned. Nothing was working. Perhaps a mild abrasive, soft scrub. Nope, that didn't work either. Time to bring out the big guns! STEEL WOOL ...... ARGH! That didn't work either!
My advice to everyone is to clean it regularly. Don't wait! As soon as I get to Venice tonight, I'll be cleaning the exhaust on my thou. I will not allow it to get like this!
Alright, I have pics and am still having difficulty uploading them. I don't want to mess with it right now since I have a nice clean bike waiting for me to 'dirty her up'. I'll deal with it after my ride!

I did mine a couple of weeks ago. You really should wet sand before the polish. I used 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper (Wal-Mart had everything I needed.) I got them as shiny as brand new. 2 weeks later and they are blue again. It's a big waste of time. :msn-wink:
