Well at last I have found a cheap and safe soloution (and suzuki recomended) method of chain cleaning. :)
Parrafin ( kerosine to those who arnt as old as me) is sold at B+Q wharehouse in 5ltr containers for £4.89p. ( its in the garden centre part and is located by the greenhouse heater stuff).
I tried everywhere for this stuff and couldnt get any........ but they now stock it!

5ltr will last for ages and as its not going to wreck your chain as its safe to use on o + x rings........ as well as cleaning it will lubricate and is safe if you get it splashed on tyres.

It is also ideal for degreasing the grubby bits of your bike as it isnt corrosive. It wont stain alloy like 'muck off' does :ranting:

Their are a lot of threads on here debating about wd40 and gearbox oil etc... But parafin is what suzuki and most other makers recomend. I have read in bike magazines that wd40 isnt suitable but hey im not starting another debate here! ( this is cheaper than WD40 anyway).

Buying in this quantity is far cheaper than expensive aerosols which last only a couple of cleans........ Ive used the stuff today and used only a tiny bit in a plant sprayer with a stiff brush. All the crud off the swinging arm came off a doddle. :first:

good advice all i need now is a abba stand but i just put a £400 deposit down on a weeks holiday in spain in october just to keep the wife happy so i'll have to wait for a stand now :ranting: i cleaned mine with wd40 the other day and i had to pull the bike over on its stand and turn the back wheel :(

I have been using kerosene for years now when cleaning the chain or removing the chain wax from the wheel!

A guy who sells o-rings and seals told me one time that if you want to make an o-ring bigger, soak it in WD-40 and it will swell up!

Dont buy it at B&Q, buy it at an oldfashioned ironmongers or some old petrol stations, they do it a LOT CHEAPER. I buy it by the gallon and pay £2.00p for a refil. They want £3.00 if you want to use thier container.

Another great chain cleaning tip is to get two 8" gate hinges, bolt the two flat plate ends together and then screw nail brushes on the ends of the long thin bits of the hinge (No camera at the moment sorry) to form like a pair of BBQ tongues. The two nail brushes can then be held either side of the chain to scrub it whilst dousing it in parafin.

This is a lot cheaper and possibly more effective than the purpose made chain scrubbing devices.

Ok and now mount two brushes on either side of that facing up and down to clean the top and bottom of the chain.

I usually just use a brush designed for cleaning finger nails.

Looks good! Not quite the CAD drawing that TLRman uses! LOL

Hey, ST you'd have found out quicker if you'd searched the forum

Parafin (http://www.sv1000.zyns.com/forums/search.php?searchid=246859) / Kerosene (http://www.sv1000.zyns.com/forums/search.php?searchid=246860)

You don't need two more brushes. Just move the grip from top/bottom to side/side.

Only costs about £3.

Apologies for the non CAD like drawings, I did say that it was rough.

Andy.W......... ithink your takin the Pi**?

I tried everywhere around my area to get parrafin and everywhere I asked they said " we dont have much interest for it these days"...... I think thats covered somewhere in the thread you found..... But thanks for the 'tip' :ranting:

RO,
like i said above if the petrol stations round here sold it I would of got some but B+Q had it in stock....... quite sad really i was like a fat kid in a cake shop when i found it in the garden center
Ironmongers you said................ I havent seen one of them for years.....where do you live...........Emmerdale? :msn-wink:
Around my area there are no old fashioned petrol stations....... Shell and tesco have a big control over fuel around here, all the little stations have disapeared or been turned into Indian family owned supermarkets that sell overpriced unleaded petrol and hardcore porn mags ( apparently   )

I bought some cleaning brushes from the tool market a while a go...basically look like tooth brushes specifically made for Ken dodd!

Your drawing seems familier..... Im sure hein gericke do a brush with bristles on 3 sides of a U section....... the chains come up well as ive always lubed with castrol wax from day one so there isnt a mix of allsorts stuck to it.

Im tepted to fit the scotoiler for when i go touring in the summer though as its one less thing to worry about on a 1500 mile trip.

Nope..........just misinterpreted your post as saying "I've just discovered that parafin is good for cleaning chains and you can get it at B&Q" when what you were saying was "I know parafin is good for cleaning chains but I've not been able to get any until I found B&Q sell it now"

My mistake..........maybe if you'd continued the original thread instead of starting a new one I'd not have been so stupid :D .......too many new threads make my brain go numb!
