View Full Version : Weight Savings with New Cans

Just to let people know that the stock cans weigh in at a hefty 10kg for the pair! :o
The Renegade oval carbons I have on now weigh in at 4kg - so less than half the weight! ;)
Must admit that I'm not a weight-saving fanatic when it comes to bikes but its quite interesting nonetheless....

6kg is a very worth-while weight saving.

Did you have to remap with these cans or just a straight swap? What about airbox mods? I like the thought of weight saving and more noise but not if gives very little or takes away as per other posts on this forum.
Thanks

Have a look at the thread here;
Renegade Dyno Results (http://www.sv1000.zyns.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101)
Not much difference in power anywhere so far (slightly more top and bottom ends, slightly less in the mid-range) but this is without any remapping.
Further mods still to come which should boost power and torque across the range quite substantially... :D

Ah, thanks for the link. Guess we will have to wait for all to be revealed. I fitted a Yoshi system to my TLR without remapping or airbox mods. Sound was incredible. Performance gains were hard to tell but it was a stonking engine in this form. Carbon deposits on exhaust suggested it was running a little lean but never did cause any problems.
Look forward to your next update regarding the tuning progress.

What about lighter wheels? I've read that reducing unsprung mass is a good way to improve handling. Is it a noticeable difference, or just a gimmick to get us to spend tons of money on magnesium or carbon fiber wheels?

Lighter wheels does actualy work, not only from the unsprung weight point of view but also and possibly more from the gyroscopic effect. with lighter wheels the bike will chage direction quicker eg through a set of S's hard left to hard right. Have you ever held up a push bike wheel and spun it and then tried to turn it through 90 deg. You will have noticed that it wants to turn 90 deg away from where you wanted it to you turn it left and it rolls right. Its called Gyroscopic procession and the lighter the wheel the less the effect.
So no it's not bullshit. But you will also have noticed that the wheels on your SV1000 have had the rib removed from the centre between the spokes to help lighten them, so some work has been done but not to the extent of exotic wheels at great expence. The 650 does not have this done you will also find it on things like the GSXR's.
Cheers Nico.

I just looked up Dymag wheels. WOW, they're expensive! Magnesium wheels start at $745 front and $850 rear. Carbon composites start at $1250 front and $1400 rear. And they go up from there! That's a mod I won't be making. Oh, well. It's not as though I have the skill to put all that handling to use anyway. :P
Here's a Link (http://www.streetfighters-usa.com/dymag.htm).
