Rick I don't mind if people don't like handguns. If they wish not to own thats fine by me.I just don't think they have ANY right telling me what to do.I don't have a LOT of guns but I still have more than HIS actual IQ,and you can bet the farm on that.I have got guns that I've never shot.If you feel the need, let me know,as I may be able to help you out. Most of the time, even if a yahoo breaks into your house you don't have to shoot, just rack the slide on a Remington 870 pump.EVERY HOOD,and even the good guys, knows what that sounds like.Sleep good,I do........................Les

I'm intimidated! I find these threads slightly ammusing but I'm going to have to stop reading because I can't keep up. Oh, BTW, if there is anyone else out there like me who didn't know what an ad hominem argument was, here's an explanation.
Description of Ad Hominem
Translated from Latin to English, "Ad Hominem" means "against the man" or "against the person."
An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting). This type of "argument" has the following form:
Person A makes claim X.
Person B makes an attack on person A.
Therefore A's claim is false.
The reason why an Ad Hominem (of any kind) is a fallacy is that the character, circumstances, or actions of a person do not (in most cases) have a bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim being made (or the quality of the argument being made).

lol, sorry twopumps - ad hominem is a fairly common term so i thought it would be clearly understood.
for the record, the term is often applied in a slightly less formal sense than that lent by your definition. but it is an excellent definition.

no it isn't--> the title of my thread [if taken seriously, which would be unfortunate] is only claiming that a certain group of people are dumb, it is not using that as evidence of the truth for another opinion.

no it isn't--> the title of my thread [if taken seriously, which would be unfortunate] is only claiming that a certain group of people are dumb, exactly.
& if those with whom you are debating own handguns, it is an ad hominem attack.
if you had meant to be taken seriously, you should've used a different title for your thread.

Hi twopumps (graduated to 3 yet??? :D )
Like yourself, I have followed this thread occasionally. I notice Mr G has changed from "way too much education". Personally, I left school reasonably educated, went to Uni, left quickly because I had already met my future husband, and I missed him too much. I am currently taking my Masters at the university of Life.
I haven't heard the phrase before, personally never want to hear it again. I love this site for its info, its bonhomie, and (usually) wicked senses of humour. I fail to see any bonhomie, humour, or indeed any intellectual conversation here. What I do see are several frustrated people who aren't getting out on their bikes enough. So get a grip, chaps, go sit on your bikes in the garage and make brm brm noises until the spring comes. And Mr. G., you can even wear your boots while you are sitting on it!

It is also dry here, not so warm at the moment, but the main thing stopping us from riding the bike is the very strong winds - the one blowing here is called the Tramontana, blowing upto 110 kph at the moment (gusting), not a lot of fun on the mountain/coast roads. C'est la vie, it will get better here a whole lot quicker than in the UK :D (which is why we moved!!)

Looks terrific! Arizona is obviously a very dry warm place - yes, as tim pointed out, that's the "desert" part of our climate here... :)
this winter has been unusually wet, which is a good thing, because that past 8 years have been DROUGHT. the reservoirs (they call them "lakes" but the state doesn't have any natural lakes) have been getting lower each year, & finally last year, they started implementing water restrictions. that "lake" you see in the pics (roosevelt lake) was down to 18% capacity before the rains; now it's @ 49%. much better, but we still have room for improvement. no worries, more rain in the forecast. :)
