View Full Version : I'm Offended

Powermaster- In your Aug 26 post Re: Indigo Hi-Mounts you refered to your polisher as a Jew, with a certain connotation attached. My suggestion would be if you have other comments like this to make, take it elsewhere. I personally take offense to that remark, and perhaps there are others here who do also. Why do you feel it's necessary to start that type of rhetoric on this site? Up until now the only offensive remarks have been as to the color of people's bikes, not the people themselves!

I'll double check the thread Speedo, but I would be very suprised if Jorge ment any offence, Jorges' english goes astray from time to time (excuse me for saying Jorge).

Had another look Speedo, I would like to think you are wrong here but I'll have to let Jorge explain for himself. For the record I too would hope we keep the slagging to the colour of bikes (which I don't find offensive) as it's all in jest :niceone:

i did read his post, and thought speedo66 is right for being offended. powermaster said his polisher would buy him a beer, but then maybe he wouldnt because hes a jew. i think the implication is clear. i did not take personal offense at the comment, but did find it a bit disturbing

Jorge is a stand up guy! I know he meant NO harm by anything said. I have read it and Don't understand it. Should I be offended? He mentioned Irish people too and I am Irish.

I of course do not find the jesting about the colors offensive, the bit about the "copper curse" was mine. I do however find his connotation about the jew to be very clear, and uncalled for. Perhaps it was said in jest, but still unwise perhaps for a businessman to alienate potential customers. In any case I would prefer not to have to see that on this site. :(

Hey Team, bear in mind that emotions - anger, happiness, jest, etc, etc, are expressed differently in different cultures, and that these "differences" can be amplified when a person is expressing themselves in a language which is not their native language.
Let's not be too quick to take offence.
Cheers

not too make excuses for powermaster, but maybe the relationship he has with his polisher allows him to joke about the idiot stereotypes that our society perpetuates, I have jewish friends and we joke about the stereotypes about our respective races, I really do not hink he meant any harm. If you would ever talk to powermaster, you would know him to be a very nice guy

hesevil
5th September 2003, 04:29 AM
i dont see how people are saying its because of the 'language differences', because clearly its not. he made the reference that the polisher would not buy him a beer because he is a 'jew', and therefor cheap. im not trying to inflame the situation, but i dont see how anyone could read anything different than that

have you guys even read it?

"...my polisher will probably even pay you a beer, , not sure about the beer as he is Jew"

pretty damn clear

has anyone even asked Powermaster? i doubt he would deny whatever it is he really meant

and im not saying that he is a 'bad guy'. i am just agreeing with speedo66 that offensive comments have no place on this forum... or am i wrong?

Well, here in the US, we have a little something that's called the First Amendment, giving us the right to free speech. :Punk:

But we also have something called attorneys, and a very litigious society, ready to pounce on anyone who breaks any moral or ethical rule, be it direct, in jest, or just implied. :(

Unfortunatly, people take offense to just about anything in this day and age, which causes many a problem, even when there is no ill intent or maliciousness involved. The world is full of stereotypes, which is a bad thing, and there is not much that can be done about it now. Unfortunately, stereotyping, or profiling as it is now called, grew its roots from some thing at some time, and usually that was based on some type of truth which became exagerated and/or inflated over time.

Ironic, how people as a race/nationality/religion can take offense at a statement that insinuates frugality i.e. Jewish comments, but no one really seems to take offense at statements regarding a race/nationality/religion that insinuates sexual connotations, i.e. Italian/French men being "enamorous" individuals. On the flip side, some Jewish people are quite proud of the financial opinions many have of them as a people, and some Mediterranean men take offense at the label of "lover".

Just goes to show that you can't make everyone happy all the time, and you can't lead your life expecting to not offend someone at some time. But worse yet, people all over the world are being forced to conform to the ideologies of a chosen few who deem their beliefs and/or actions as unacceptable.

In my opinion, we have much greater concerns in my country and our world that need to take precedence over some of the matters that are perceived as priorities. For example, world peace and world hunger....and more horsepower from my SV....

Well said Jimbo and magick. When you have relationships with people, you feel the liberty to be able jest about childish things. I have very close friend that is Polish, he is known as Polock Dave. He has been like a second father to me. No offence is taken, or meant. I have no idea who named him that, but he refers to himself like that when he would call or leave a message. He just isn't a sensitive twit. Quit being so quick to offend and to take offense.

Are you really Irish? As I said in my first reply I doubt very much that Jorge meant any offence and having spoken to him on a number of occasions I believe he will be very upset to think that he caused offence.
The reason I ask if you are really Irish is you don't seem to recognise your own Flag. I am Irish and know exactly what Jorge means, he is in fact complementing the Irish.
English is not Jorges' first language and sometimes it's hard to portray a sense of humour by the written word. As one of the longest members on this board I have never gotten any sense of bigotry in any shape or form dispite to international membership here, I only wish the rest of the world would take a leaf out of motorcyclists' book, something as simple as owning a machine qualifies you for the brotherhood irrespective of race, colour or creed, if only everyone else behaved as we do the world might be a more pleasant place to be. :niceone:

Here, Here Magick, I have a good friend living in Clearwater FL, he is a black police officer married to a Jewish woman, I can and do say some outragously racist things to them and vise verse, but because we are friends no one takes offence because we know it's said in jest and strictly between ourselves. In fact despite him being black and me white and both from differant sides of the world we have so much in common it's unreal. We both hate one class of person with a passion..................................criminals . When all boils down there are only three types of people...............good people ,bad people and bikers. :D

This seems a strange thread....

ive never witnessed anyone on here who would deliberately be offensive, in fact ive never seen a forum with a better bunch of guys (and girls if there are any) anywhere.

There may be the odd missplaced comment, not just about people, i mean in general.

But this is really nothing compared to what you could find on the rest of the net.

this is simply a well run forum with a load of bike loving people who want to share their love for bikes with the rest of the world!

read that last line again.....HOW COOL IS THAT!!! i can chat to someone on the opposite side of the planet about bikes and stuff and get to know people all over the world and it makes no difference whatsoever about their background, colour, religion, sex etc etc.

lets keep enjoying the site!!!

and more importantly.......

lets ride!

Andy.

Can we also remove all the posts with negative references to the police and to car drivers because i find them offensive being an officer and a car driver, and while your at it the racial comments regarding my bikes colour!!!!!!!!!

PS Jorge is one of the most sincere and genuine people i have had the pleasure of meeting he is a credit to society.

Infact why don't we just close down the site, I take the piss out of warren, because he's from the west Country and can't speak without a stupid accent, I take the piss out of Northerners, because they also speak funny and are subjected to crap weather. I take the piss out of all the Anzacs, because they are all decendants from British Criminals. I take the piss out of Canadians because they have let the french into parts of their country, and I take the piss out of Americans because of this 'we are the best in the world' attitude.

Infact I will take the piss out of anyone who gives me the opportunity to do so....and whats more I hope that they would give it back and then some, if they have the opportunity!

IT IS CALLED BANTER!!!

The fact is:

1. Warren and myself have forged a very good friendship since finding out we have a common interest...the Bike and the job!
2. Northerners may speak funny to me, but I am as sure as hell they find my accent strange and would be the first to call me a shandy swilling southern poof!
3. The New Zealanders and Australians have proved just how you can turn around and smack a country that extradited you across the face. They are infact some of the nicest people, have lovely weather, lovely countryside, and a wicked sense of humour, not to mention their success on the field of sport!
4. The canadians are a lovely bunch, and so are the French, have you ever been to France on your bike, only to have cars pull out of your way and let you enjoy the roads, and also have police that are a lot more tolerant when it comes to speed!
5. The Americans have this persona of thinking they are the best in the world, infact they have a right to do so, they are a big country with a multicultural society that has been through a hell of a lot, but I also know that the average American has no hatred in his blood, he is happy and proud to be American.

Through my job I have seen a lot of countries where there has been widespread ethnic cleansing, I have also been part of an organisation that has attempted to give a country peace and stability to develop its own identity.

Taking offence at something that clearly can be seen as a joke is totally purile, infact infantile. Jorge obviously gets on well with his Jewish colleague, if he didn't he wouldn't have wasted his time trying to make a joke of something. Infact if he was a racist, do you believe his jewish friend would enven be under his employ??? I doubt it!

To summise, GROW UP AND STOP BEING SO TOUCHY!

We all like to have a laugh on this brilliant website, I should know about having the piss taken out of you, I get enough piss taken out of me because I am half German and work in the British Armed Forces!

If you don't like what you read, go to another webpage or even better put a hammer through your monitor!

Get A Life!

To all other readers, sorry, been following this since it's outset; I was ignopring it, but this kind of shit really makes my blood boil!

And while we are at it lets take all offensive language, sexually explicit material, grotesque avatars, references to the devil (oops  ), copies of copyrighted material or pictures and replace it with God fearing, honest, love thy neighbour posts (even then we exclude the heathens and offend their beliefs).

speedo66, have you looked at and enjoyed the Flash Girlie? What about the girls on our bikes thread? This is an open forum and freedom of speech prevails. Jorge is, as quoted many times above, a decent kind of guy. He likes a good joke and plays fun with stereotypes like the rest of us. Did you enjoy reading the We all hate Harley riders thread? You are the only one who has picked up on this and mentioned it - do we all tread on glass now when we write our posts or carry on with a live and let live attitude that will keep things neutral?

World wars have started over less than this killing million of lives - shame.

I sincerely thank you all for your input, unfortunately, I have not heard from the person I would like most to hear from. As to the remark regarding World Wars and the millions killed, I'm familar with that, I no longer have any relatives in Europe because of that. I guess it was their fault because they didn't speak up or take action. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my being offended. I hope in the future to be able to concentrate on motorcycles.

I have said this before, you can put a couple of hundred thousand people from all nationalities on a small island a few miles long and even less wide in the middle of the Irish Sea for two weeks in May/June. The only thing most have in common is Motorcycles. All the Police (all two dozen of them) have to do is go around nicking people for speeding.

Put two football supporters in a monestary and you're guaranteed a fight (and that's even if they support the same team).

Outside of the "gang/club" culture I have never seen a hobby break down all social barriers like biking.

Motorcyclists you just gotta luv 'em................

I appreciate your sentiments Speedo and you too have a right to be heard and maybe can't help being offended, that's fair enough. I'm sure as soon as Jorge logs in again he will respond. I think as we become friendlier it's good that we can converse on other subjects too (it's how we learn). I don't think anyone should jump down your neck for expressing a concern, it's better that it's discussed and explained in a measured manner and we all then know where we stand. No good can come from you just bugging out from this site, it's better to stay, talk and clear the air. :niceone:
