Well, since I sold my SV1000S almost a year ago now and have been bitten by the bug again, I have decided to buy a SV650. The nimbleness is something I want to have...
So, how many own one here? I am looking at buying a yellow 05 and start going crazy streetfighter on it like I did with my 98 bandit that the wife will ride!
Please gimme advice, people! Make me a part of the SV community once again!
Thanks!

What do you want to know? I like the look of the yellow 05's w/their black frames.

I rode my buddie's brand new, yellow 05 SV650s the other day. I wasn't on it long but here some of my impressions. This bike has just been broken in at 500 miles
The bike feels more nimble than the 1000, with less weight and a 160 rear tire. Some of the lighter "feel" might be lack of a steering damper as well. Stock exhaust makes it sound like a moped. But I like the polished can. (its freakin huge though) The engine revs pretty quick (bigger rear sproket) It had more power than I expected actually. Pulled strong to 90 mph and had plenty left. (Couldn' go faster in the given traffic).
Overall, it pretty much feels like a lighter version of the SV1000. Just as you would expect!

The 650's are great bikes! They are already becoming a classic. They do everything very well, and have been extremely low maintenance for us. (a 2000 naked model bought at the end of 1999). A lot more fun than the 1000S, with less power.

They have a yellow leftover '04 down here in the Quad Cities which is about 2.5 hours from DesMoines.
My brother has an '04 650 and it is a great bike. One major must do mod is the fork springs.

Mine's only a 2000 so I don't know how much advice I can give.
I will say that I like it so much I'm considering a new one.

Thanks, guys. I must say that one thing that bothered me with the 1000S was the weight. After riding a buddies 954RR, jumping back on the 1000S made it fell pig-gish and heavy. Not trying to knock the SV1000S at all, just stating how I felt.
Our bandit 600 is a fun bike now and I love riding it and taking hard corners even though its got a skinny rear tire. Just more fun to ride.
I think we will land up getting a blue 05 SV650. I love the blacked out wheels, swingarms and frame. LIke the new speed triple which to me is pure sex!
2WIN - I am getting one for 5K + 375 shipping from outta state which no one will match here in DSM, Iowa City etc. Also, where do I read up on the fork spring mod?
Thanks all! I am feeling much more confident with this purchase!

They have one here at my QC dealer that is blue. I like the new smaller radiator and fairing they put on them now.
The weight of the SV is relative to your weight to. I am a pretty big guy so I am able to move it around pretty easily.

Of course a couple tweaks and it looks better yet!!
You know what!?!? A carbon fibre Yosh tri-oval would look awesome on this bike!

here are two sites that may help with info on the 650:
www.svrider.com
www.socalsvriders.com
svrider.com has a database of mods
socalriders.com has a search function - a local tuner(Reno, Nv) (handle=zoran) often frequents the site - he used to endurance race the 650 - works for a shop that goes by TWF ( Twin Works Factory)
Suzuki has skimped on the suspension on the 650 - Both Race Tech and Progessive Suspension make springs for the forks.
Most common fix is to dump the fork oil replace it with 20wt and a new spring - it's stiff for road work - but is nice for track days.
there are many choices for rear shocks - check out the sites above for info
good luck and have fun!

I think the suspension on the 650 is as good as the suspension on the 1000. I used to think that the 650 had better suspension until I found a range of adjustment that worked on the 1000.
The 650 suspension does an excellent job as is. Unless you start having trouble with it I suggest leaving it alone. Ride smoothly and it will work great.

My brother bought an '05 650S about 2 weeks ago. It is definitely more "flickable". A little weak on the low end compared to the 1K(what would you expect?), but going through the curves its awesome. I've always known, and the rides I've taken on the 650 has proven, that there's nothing like a lightweight for straightening out a bent road!

Thanks for all the responses, gang.
We ordered a blue one since the darker color is less contrast to the black frame. I want to do black everything on it...cans, renthal bars, dual headlights etc etc...I think a high mount looks awesome on these esp. the holeshot high mount.
Also, is a gsxr600 or 750 shock with the reservoir on top an upgrade to these. The bandit guys use a busa shock, so I was wondering the gsxr600 or 750 shock would work on these!
Thanks!

Not sure on teh new generation, but on the 1st generation the 96-98 SRAD shock was a bolt in upgrade over stock. And the SRAD USD forks were a near bolt in upgrade with very slight modification. TONSs of info on www.svrider.com about mods. I'm sure if it can be done to a SV650 someone there has done it.

The GSXR 600/750 shock have a pretty light spring. The GSXR 1000 (2003/2004) shock is better suited for the new SV's. For a shock swap guide, check this site: http://www.kuhnco.com/SV650/GSXRShockSwap
And finally a picture of mine. I just put a handlebar on my 650S. Works awesome to!

What are you looking to gain by swapping the shock? That would influence what the preferred choices would be.

Out of all the bikes made, their is no other bike I would want. After I put the full hindle, gixxer rear shock, race tech front, +1 tooth rear sproket and gold DID chain, seriously with a v twin and the weight there is no other
THANKS SUZUKI :first: (w00t)

I've been thinking about buying an '05 SV 650 for racing. I've heard that racing the gen 2 SV's can break the crank. Anyone have any experience with this???

There have been quite a few 2nd Gen SV's with crank & rod problems. As far as I know there has not been a definitive diagnosis of the cause and cure. There are a few areas that have been mentioned as the possible culprits. If youearch the WERA and CCS forum websites you can learn more. There was also an article in Roadracingworld recently.

I got an 05 yellow.........I love it. I walked into the dealer with 6k cash and said I want that bike. I didnt budge. So now i have it. Im 5'9" and it fits me perfect. I ride it almost every day. I dont care how hot it is. Once you get an exhuast and other goodies, you dont need anything bigger. With the way gas is here, its 7.50 to fill it and it lasts me the week. I love the stares I get when im at a light, from grand parents to kids.......they all smile! :headbang:

I gots me one. They screwed up my order in Ohio and crated up a SV650s instead. I got them to sell it to me for their cost. I got an awesome deal. Plus, it was only 250 to ship in a crate to me. It came in on tuesday, I will post pics soon. Thanks!
