I'm going to get myself some spare bearing after the Gadge and Mr Rose incidents. I'm getting two rear sets for me and one for Ken - anyone else interested?
Also if you have a specific recomendation fire away asap as I'm going to talk to a bloke that has an E-bay listing and see about a discount (not expecting a great deal but every little helps) Uk based obviously as you guys in the states probably can get them for way less than we can anyway.

standard bearings, or some special bearings??
BTW...you find something you want in the US, that is a better deal cause of the weak dollar....I am more than happy to buy it( with money sent to me via paypal), and ship it over...you cover shipping.

cheers Dougz I'll widen my search then
Not so much special - looking for better than OEM and probably the sealed version made a bit better if I can find it.

I recently replaced the bearings in my OZ wheels. They used KOYO (Japan) bearings in the rear and SKF (France) in the front. Both were sealed on both sides. Here's a LINK (http://www.sv-portal.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29178) if anyone is interested in more info.

I think it is not a case of IF your bearings are going to let go but WHEN !!!
I would be interested in a set of bearings having seen the mess pete's wheel was in. The new bearings that we fitted were all koyo double sealed ones if you want the references , I have kept the boxes.
IMHO the bearings are not man enough, I am going to look into getting the wheel machined and fitting slightly wider bearings. These wheels are the same as the gixer 600 and 750 which are 4 cylinder bikes , I really believe, especially when you see how small the bearings are , that they are not up to the job of handling a 1000cc v twin power. However they would last much better if they wernt able to throw out what grease they were fitted with what brain surgeon at suzuki permitted single sealed bearings?
What I find interesting is that it proved virtually impossible to get a s/h rear wheel at any breaker in France and the UK so maybe more people are having a problem than we are lead to believe maybe they are letting go on the 600's and 750S ??

Well, I'm interested too - especially if I could get 'better then OEM' stuff. Would like a full set though - front and rear wheel.

Anything new with this??
I just put on a new rear tire last night...trying out the Pilot Road 2CT since my PP wore down too much in the center from riding to work a lot this season....and I think my bearings may be going.
Before I took the week off, there was an odd clunk when rotating the wheel, with the bike on the stand..I thought it may have been the chain. Now, I put the wheel back on, and it clunks in a couple places. I suspected the bearing when I had the wheel off....so I checked them with my finger and they all seemed to roll freely. It only does this clunking when the axle is torqued down.
I don't know what else it could be??

OK a quick update is due so
double sealed rubber versions
Front 2 off - ID 25 OD 52 W 15
Rear 2 off - ID 28 OD 52 W 12

VXB (USA) can supply 8 sets to the UK for ~£18 front and rear with sprocket bearing too. This does not include customs though so its pot luck on that one and obviously UK postage on top.
Compares well to Wemoto at complete Rear set £30.15 + postage, pair front £16.45 + postage with seals.
UK sources - yet to come back with quotes
Discount Dave E-bay
and
EBR-bearings
For you guys in the US suggest you use my bearing dimensions (check them though) and jump straight onto VXB as you'll have no heavy "across the pond" shipping or customs to deal with - however note that the front bearings are sold in blocks of eight. Mind you at the price all I can say is
you lucky barstewards

FYI i have had a set of bearings sent here from the uk in the last couple of days as I was concerned at what I had seen with Pete's bike. Yesterday i dismantled the bike and removed the old bearings, it only takes 30 minutes or less.
Upon dismantling I found the bearings in A1 condition after 17,000 miles so good in fact that after washing them out i repacked them with grease and put them on the shelf and would use them again if required.
The only reason I didnt put them back in was I feel the double sealed bearings offer better long term reliability, as they do not allow the grease to be thrown out of the side where there is no seal, ok you cant repack them with grease, but one shouldnt need to as it stays inside.
If I keep the bike for another 15k miles I shall probably just change them again as a matter of course the set only cost 23 pounds with post so it is hardly a great expence or inconvenience.

Just a further thought, I know pete didnt torque his rear axle up to anywhere near where it should be, It would be interesting to know if the others like Gadge, or Dave Hobbs or any others who have had bearing failure tightened their axle up to the correct torque or not.

Update so far is that discount Dave apologised for taking so long to reply - he is looking at new suppliers for his bearings and will get back soon
as soon as I have a figure you guys will too - I for one am getting itchy

Both my wheel spindles are always torqued up to the recommended figures. I have seen front spindle clamps cracked so I reduce the torque there by 10% and wire lock them.
When I wanted replacement front wheel bearings I just took the knackered ones to a bearing factor in Bristol (Check Yellow pages) and asked for "same again but double sealed". I think they cost about £18

Thats about right Dave, i have a pair right here on the Pc desk and they are made by SCH www.schgroup.com and the price tag on them is £8.45 each. which i will be fitting when i replace my front brake discs.

Got fed up waiting for discount Dave and have sourced some in the UK (thanks to Nigel and Ken) - on order and it looks like Pete, Ken and I will be having three of the four sets so there might be one spare. I'll update on arrival but they sound good and are double sealed so pukka equipment.
Price when it all comes through but its looking good and with the recent $£ shift may be equivalent without the risk of customs adding their cut :spank:
BTW I'm also sourcing swingarm roller needle prices but I don't expect much call for them - but I'm down for a set if I can get the old ones out
expect arrival in the next few days and if there good I'll arrange sets if people let me know
BTW for you US guys VXB is your best looking price so if you need some contact them for damn good prices.

Bearings arrived and all looks great - double sealed Koyo units and SKF
So for the UK better than the stealers both in price and quality as these are double sealed.
Mission accomplished
Fronts (2 bearings) £10 + postage
Rears (2 bearings) £12 + postage (bit heavier)
Sprocket (1 bearing) £6 + postage (heaviest but only one)
complete set £25 + postage (i.e 2 front, 2 rear and the sprocket)
Let me know if you want in and I'll organise group buys in sets of four and split as necessary

I would like to warn everyone that I don't belive DrG is really a doctor. The bearings arrived with a hand written note that was extremely neat and clearly readable.
....and I'm sure if I had hunted around I could have got the bearings for £4.99 each instead of the £5 he's charging :ranting:
Pete
Money on it's later today, cheers.

what do you mean neat - I can't read my own bloody handwriting - gald they arrived safe though. I'm in the throws of desiging myself a bearing puller as me back one don't want to come out :wallbash:
I'll not be beaten by 'em

OK so make that a bearing pusher as in the end I settled for a rod with a nut on the end and slowly worked them out from behind - little swines but easy once you know how.
As for what shape were the old ones in?
look at this dross - cheers for making the stds single sided Mr Suzuki :ranting:
No wonder they fail spectacuilarly when they go
If you don't know if yours need replacing - put your finger in and try to move the inner race around - it should move easily and really, really smoothly - funnily enough these were knotching and you could feel it moving the rust around in the grease ugh.

This is a picture of a front bearing (25,000 mile) from mine when i changed them when doing the wavy disc's,as you can see there is not a lot of grease left in them and what was in seemed to be solidifying so it was not doing much lubricating.

Pete,
To be honest I don't know who many miles or the history as they were from Tediums rear wheel I bought and the three bearings were pretty much shagged even though they had grease in them but thats the way it goes - its now a shiney blue with gold fleck and lashings of acrylic with super smooth bearings greased and ready to roll :killingme
Ken,
Yours look weird don't they - no grease in them - wow! I'll give you a call tomoorow to catch up b ut your set is definately safely tucked aside no problem
