So, what's your favorite cage?

Cage you'd most like to have, cost no object: 1954 Mercedes 300SL

Best cage you've ever owned: 1994 Honda Civic. Hey, I'm a poor, starving college student, OK!? But not for long... :D

Cage you had the most fun with: Two, actually. 1981 Toyota Corolla I bought for $500US when I was 16. RWD, bald tires and lots of dirt roads, woohoo! My dad's 1984 Toyota minivan with the huge sunroof in the back. Party wagon!

Probable next cage: Toyota Tacoma X-Cab 4x4. Will be moving around a lot for the next few years, need place to put all my stuff. Plus, much fun in the dirt!

Cage for Fun: my 93 Toyota MR2 turbo. If ya gotta be in a car, this one's worth being in.
Cage for Cruising: the wife's 97 Mitsubishi Diamante 30M MIVEC. Smooth as silk but there's a 240BHP variable valve timing engine which will do nearly 8000rpm & a five speed tiptronic gearbox.

Cheers

If your gonna drive a cage, you might as well make an impact. Here goes, my cage is a Y60 1989 Nissan Patrol deisel with a two inch body lift a 6inch suspension lift and 35 inch Mickey Thompson tyres that look like they belong on a tractor. Awesome in the hills and bush, slow as a wet week around town. Would you believe I have been fined for speeding and lost more licence points in this rig than I have on all of my bikes put together, and it only pulls 140km/h flat out down a hill with a strong tail wind.

And no, I'm not the four wheel drive that pulled out in front of the motorbike.

Adios
Tony

Scneegz,
My wife and I were driving along Rainbow Beach on the East coast a few hundred kilometres north of Brisbane. It was late afternoon and we were waiting fot the tide to go down when we were passed by a four wheel drive tourist bus driving in the soft sand above the high water mark. As we excpected it became bogged a few hundred metres up the beach. the crew jumped out with these tiny shovels, dug some gentle ramps in front and behind the wheels, jumped back into the bus after it rocked forward and back in the new tracks and de-bogged itself. This happened again about 20 metres later. I was enjoying a nice cold beer waiting for the tide to drop enough to drive safely north. We came along side the bus which had failed to de-bog itself this time. It turned out the passengers were from your neck of the world and the crew were from Bondi Beach in northern New South Wales. They were trying to reach the Fraser Island Barge in time for it's last run to the island from Rainbow Beach township that evening, hence the desire to risk driving in the soft sand. I offered to tow them out with a snatch strap ( like a super heavy duty rubber band) and they all laughed quite a lot. I managed to convince them to give it a go. Needless to say, by the time we reached Rainbow Beach Township, about 20 kilomtres north, and both my wife and I had taken turns at retreiving them they were thoroughly impressed. As was I because each time we helped them out they shouted me a beer or two, and the group made great company of an otherwise lonenly trip. One guy says "over home every one's into Dodges GMs and Toyotas. Man I'm going to tell evry one about this". Needless to say I had a big head all night when I hooked up with friends travelling south and told them of our adventure that day. If you hear some blond bloke talking about the deisel nissan tell him I said G'day.

Tony:

GREAT story, man! I've always been partial to late '60s, early '70s Land Cruisers, but I realize there are a lot of good vehicles we just don't see over here.

Hey, this probably won't happen for several years (gotta save up some scratch first), but I've been wanting to take a motorcycle tour of NZ for a long time now. I've looked up places to rent bikes and such, but I'll need recommendations of places to see and all that. I'm hoping some of you Kiwis can help me with that.

Also; is it easy to find places to camp, or will I need to stay in a hotel? How do I save money staying at a hotel? Any tourist traps you can warn me to stay away from? Most importantly; what are the best places to meet hot chicks (birds to you, I think)? :D

Shneegz,
I can help you with places in Australia, but you'll have to ask some of the other boys about New Zealand. A mate of mine spent some time on the north island camping and bush bashing with his father in law. The scenery is awe inspiring. Makes a bloke jealous of the Kiwi biking bretheren really.

Best place to inquire about biking in NZ is at my Kiwi Biker site.

Well if I had to make a choice I guess it would have to be my current machine an XR6 Falcon it would have to be the best alround car I have ever driven. Thats most likely why it won Wheels car of the year award. Maybe my next one will be the Turbo, a smokin machine 240kw, lots of ponnies that like to get loose. Then again I reckon I'm a bit one eyed you see I'm a test driver for Ford in Aussie so they pay me to have fun. See my two favourite forms of transport below.

Plenty of accommodation right round NZ from motels to pubs to backpackers to campgrounds, pretty much any hick town has something to cheap offer. Our currenty is pretty weak too so unless they're coming from Argentina or somesuch most travellers do well on the exchange rates. Also Kiwi bikers tend to be pretty hospitable. Certainly if you're in my area there will be something there for you.

Not having travelled much outside Australasia I can't compare our roads but everybody seems to rave about them. By international standards traffic density is low and while our police are sharing the western world's preoccupation with speed as the cause of everything from herpes to global warming, outside the towns the roads tend to be relatively lightly policed. The nature of NZ is such that the roads are all pretty twisty and undulating, just what you need on a grunty bike that handles.

Cheers

Du-oh! There I go showing my ignorance by not being able to tell the Australian and New Zeland flags appart at a glance. I get it now. Auzzie is white stars, Kiwi is red stars. Both display the Southern Cross, right?

SpankME:

So, how come Ford cars look so much better down there than they do in the US? :P Been checking out your Kiwi Biker site. Nice! How do you find the time to keep both sites going?

Flange:

Sounds like a blast! I just hope I can keep the left-side-of-the-road thing straight! I plan on doing as much camping as possible to save money. And, of course, your summer is our winter. So it'll be a great time to get away from the cold and ride!

Just curious, what software did you use to pull the color from your XR6 to your SV, and maintain the original shading and reflectivity? I'm a rookie at the graphics....

Nico

Jimbo77,
Photoshop is the way to go, you have to spend a bit of time selecting the area you want to change with the magic wand once you have that copy it to a second layer and save it as a master then each time you want to play its easy to select the whole layer and adjust the hue and saturation and colourise options. The bike was done by eye but you can take a colour sample and use that if you are having trouble getting the colour your after.

Regards Nico.

PS check this one out. That is if you like that sort of thing.

Heres my cage in town mode. For competition I use a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Claws another two inches higher and wider than these jiggers. It was a decision that come about as a result of the fact its a weekend warrior and a weekday shopping trolley. i.e. Jo drives it to work all week and I get to play on the weekends.
You'll also notice it's biker friendly, if it comes to the worst just lay the bike down and chances are you'll slide out the other side untouched! :P
Doesn't quite go as fast as the bike though.

Cage you'd most like to have, cost no object: Fully restored and hot rodded 1967-69 Chevy Camaro

Best cage you've ever owned: 1995 Subaru Impreza 2.2 L (AWD and still going strong after 117k HARD miles)

Cage you had the most fun with: 1967 Chevy Impala 2d fast back (as fast as a 5200lb car can be) I dated a stripper at the time ( not your average run of the mill stripper either, she worked at the million dollar saloon in Dalllas TX and mens club in HOuston TX. Also did videos for Motley Crue, Ratt, Whitesnake and Pantera)...and this car could haul LOTS OF STRIPPERS!!!! Hell, I enjoyed ridin her around more than the car. ;)

Probable next cage: I will most likly inherit my wifes 2003 Pontiac VIBE....gutless POS that it is...just like I inherited the Subaru. OUr deal is I take the OLD car you get a new one and I get a new bike.

Hmm.... I'm noticing a trend here. The "best cage you've ever owned" and "most fun" cages people are listing seem to be very ordinary, almost mundane. So much for all that jibberish the auto mags feed us, eh? B)
