Can someone give me an idea as to how the rep point system works, I know how points are given and how many you carry affect the points you give... but how do rep points coreleate with the green boxes? Also where is it going next, can people continue to get more spectacular?

Well I don't have access to that info so we'll have to wait for BJAM or SpankMe to appear.
I would imagine its graded in a similar manner as the member titles/ranks (http://www.sv1000.zyns.com/forums/showthread.php?p=36974).

Perhaps, but valid point well made IMHO.
It is of little consequence to where I may stand as I choose not to have the rep table displayed anymore on my homepage, casues too much nause. Be my position good or bad, I know what I do for the site and thats good enough for me. :)

Does it cause you that much nausea the fact that someone who has done nothing for the forum is in the top ten rep list ??? If everyone else is in the same mind as you then why have a rep list in the first place !! .
I thought it was there for anyone to give rep points to whoever they feel deserve points, whether that be for a good post or for bringing drive to the forum. I understand that it has been abused by certain individuals in the past, so im sure this will sort itself out and you will see who really deserves to be in the top ten !!!

I agree to an extent of what Chewy said, back patting is good if you have done good things like the clothing run, stickers etc but are we saying that there is no back scratching going on with yours mate?? You and Andy 'H' seem to be very high on the list after all!

Sorry I didn't mean for this to get into a site politics debate, however I get the feeling that people are genuinely confused by the system, and also slightly warey of using it.
I do not have the knowledge, equipment, time, or ability for producing goods for members of this site, however I don't see that this should be used as a rod to beat us with, the work that some of you guys have put into this site is fantastic, however its not the kind of contribution I am in a position to make. Does this mean that I can't be reputable?
If someone makes me laugh, or I get a good bit of information, I will try and recognise that by giving points, because "I" deem them to be worth them, and that is the whole deal with the rep points.... It is your vote, and your freedom to for want of a better word to elect people that you have gained from throughout your time on this website.
And sometimes it has nothing to do with motorcycles.
Sorry rant over

By that comment i ment good and informative posts i have given many out for very usefull information. I have also give + rep points to take a couple of members off the BAD reputation list on the home page. As having read all there posts i couldn`t find the reason why even after a PM to these members. These members know who they are. I have never given out bad rep points but i HAVE recived them ?? when i PM them for the reason why seems its a miss understanding on there side.

Thats the problem with text !!! It cant be Interpreted how it was meant to be said.
Most of the members on the bad rep list have said things in the heat of the moment or the words they have typed have been mis-interpreted by the reader !. Maybe we should set up web cams with mic's so we can all speak to each other in person. Make it more lively !!!:sweatdrop

My god, what is happening to this site?
It seems that I dissapear into the back ground for a week and all the internal bickering starts up (well at least from the UK members!) What is so wrong with the lightheartedness of the reputation points? I have certainly gained a few, as well as dished some out as a giggle! Infact, the original site Admin from the UK (BJAM) and myself were on a war path to get Skidz off the top a few months ago, as it was pointed out that it would pee him off - in a lighthearted way of course!
This is exactly what I was worried about 6 months ago when the subject of whether or not the site would stagnate was broached, unfortunately there is only so much that can be spoken about one bike (albeit with two varients). - this site needs the humour, the silly little wars, the immature rantings amongst the lot of us; even the heated discussions between the UK and US (err, the Iraqi question seems to stick in my mind!).
Come on guys lighten up, if you don't you will die after having a very boring existance on this mortal coil! - That includes the Admin/Moderator bods here aswell as all of us that take offence at someone ridiculing their ideals, or even the guys that just sulk at having the piss taken out of them.
One thing is certain in my life at the moment, If I can't come back here and have a giggle when I come back from the South Atlantic in late October for my 2 weeks leave, then I sure as hell won't be coming back to the site in February when I move to Germany! I have my friends that I have made from this site, you know who you are, and I will keep in touch with you, but if things don't lighten up, I'll be out of here for good!

Let's just stop the bitching right now before things degenerate to the stupid cliques that exist on the 650 forum. Everybody on there is so bloody opinionated but doesn't realise that that's what they are opinions. There are few facts, just versions of truth. Live and let live.

Its a bit like a yardie gang, the trouble is reputation is a very volitile commodity, you can be flying high one minite and then swiftly dethroned it would seem, surely admin could dole out large amounts of rep points for specific things eg yours and andys parts. Bit like house points in Harry Potter, and that way it will even things out.
Banter points will always happen, and I am sure always will, but this is the only thing I could think of to sort out the situation.

I said in March in defining the awards thread the following-.
---------------------------------
I just think that the giving of awards may alienate some people from the site. We all know whom the main contributors of the site are, and im sure they don't feel the need of an award in big bold on every one of their posts. Every person that makes a post is contributing and thats what is important. We can all see the contribution that each of us has made by how many posts, but it doesn,t mean that someone with 5 posts is any less respected. I personally did not come on this site to be judged. Just my thoughts on it all.
Cheers.

I totally agree with Andy (sv1000sbiker). What i have gained from this site is meeting some great people, having a laugh, learning more than i ever could anywhere else about my bike, and helping people.
We need some fun or we'll get bored.

I wouldn't expect anyone to not earn, and good on them, and we're grateful it has been offered to us, but i would prefer if it was not implied that you deserve reputation, due to gainful contribution, therefore unless you have produced something, you do not deserve reputation.

Adam gave me rep points once which I didn't understand so I PM'd him. He set me straight on his sence of humor and we have been mates ever since. I feel as if I made a friend that day. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about? Not boosting ego's or making people out to be asses.

I reply honestly and there you go.....:(
FYI I did voice concerns on the outset whether it was a good idea at the time when it was incepted, but then the majority spoke and majority got. Simple as that.
I am not going to get into deep debates about it, suffice to say I do not particularly worry about it now, my personal views are irrelevent here. I choose not to view the table because of this, I don't particularly care where I stand nor whether I am up or down in +/- reps. I read and reply to posts that interest me. Like others, I do not give out the -ve reps any issues I have sorted via private messaging, but the trend on the site is to pick a target and flame. Plenty of threads around like it. Perhaps if i choose not to view the table, maybe I should not bother dishing out any all.
Not a toys out of the cot post and certainly this post should not be construed as sour grapes, far from it not looking for tea and sympathy, I am just being honest, besides family come way before this site now. At the time I joined the site, there was a lot of hot air as to what could be done but nobody taking any initiative. I just did what I did because I wanted to and enjoyed doing it. If it is now in vogue that you feel the need to flame me, go ahead.....can't make me pregnant :bleh:
Like Thumpa says, live and let live........i'm just looking forward to the next big site event and looking forward to meeting friends both old and new from here.
I will continue to do things for the good of the site, I plan to do one more clothing run after the meet and other bits and pieces as far as my ability will allow me to do so. Should this prove unsatisfactory to the membership, then perhaps its time to move aside. Admin and mods do make from time to time make decisions which not every one wishes to have introduced, but for the same people to openly criticise those decisions without trying to contact them first with their concerns is getting wearing and does take the edge off looking forward to logging on the site.
Brian / Ash.....Take me off the rep board please.

Tried not to react to this but here we go: What the HELL do you mean by that complete? I keep quite nowadays because this site has declined into nothing more than a chat room full of drivel and absolute bollocks (with the occasional decent post). You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes - I do.
Every now and then the site resets all counters and performs a recount of the reputation system and total posts for each user. Any inconsistencies are addressed at this point. This means, even with a bit of fun in mind with fellow members, everything returns to normal. You think Admin and Mods are Gods when in fact we bust our balls keeping this drivel alive. If you don't like how this forum is run go and start your own and make a better job of it!

Brian - Sorry you took that statement of mine the wrong way.
I did not mean any offence in any way.
I do disagree about this site turning into a chat room full of bollocks and drivel. It is rapport between people who have all made the progression from being members to becoming friends. Others have joined in and the circle of friends is getting bigger. What is wrong with that?
There are a few long threads of chatroom like material, but there are many, many threads of contribution, advice, ideas and help, to improve our bikes and improve our knowledge of motorcycling and we have had some fun which has kept this alive.
Without you, Spankme, Skidz and all other Admin none of this would have been possible. I personally miss you not being as active with your posts, as your contribution has been amazing, and the subjects and topics you have started have helped me and others no-end.
We all totally appreciate what you have all done and hope that it will continue and i am once again sorry if you took offence to what I said.

Dont worry mate. More important things in life. Business as usual, just no rep points debating.
Sorry to keep on about this, but the crux of my issue is that points are awarded from one member to another for whatever reason, and someone has taken it upon themselves to completely remove it.
This was actioned without any user consultation. I never would have thought that this forum was an autocracy.
I think it only fair that we know why this decision was made, and why they felt it wholly their responsibility to decommission this, and not in the interest of the community.
This thread was only ever meant to uncover how the reputation system works, however it seems that it has revealed a more sinister side of the forum, I never realised how many lurking agendas there must be within a group of people who own similar motorcycles.
So if someone would like to reach into there pocket and find their balls, could you possibly spare the time to let us all know what is going on.
Knowing my luck the reputation system will be instantly reinstated just for the purposes of putting me cul de sac!

The reputation system certinally has a valueble use to me. As a newer member of the site only about a month or so now the rep system gives me a way to evaluate the answers to my questions. For example: if someone is answering my post and has 2,500 of there own posts but no rep points I will seek other opinions, because I myself could cut and paste all day long in the joke thread and have 2,500 posts as well. The rep system is a great way for new people to judge themselves if they are being given a valuable reply, and just how correct that reply may be based on viewing the replyer's rep points. I do however agree that to keep it this way rep. points, if they come back must be given out in a responsible manor so they may stay a tool for new members to evaluate the responses they are given. Just my $.02. Don't care if I spelled anything wrong. Just wanted to voice my opinion. Or is it a rant if it's this long. Great site let's keep it that way.

Original by BJAM: "Every now and then the site resets all counters and performs a recount of the reputation system and total posts for each user. Any inconsistencies are addressed at this point. This means, even with a bit of fun in mind with fellow members, everything returns to normal. "
Sounds to me like site maintanence and everything will be normal soon.
Guess this holds true

Lets start with one collection of comments (no names for obvious reasons) and see if you can guess who has collected these comments.

Do I need to continue? Are you getting the picture here? Is this reputation system nothing more than a barter system in the background? Is it a way to hit back at those who deserve to be at the top? Should you really be kicking those who contribute the most in the teeth. Think long and hard about this reputation system and stop throwing your toys out the pram just because it was being fixed for a few hours.

Complete, Robbo, Skins et al......I'm dissappointed that you'd really think that whatever has been done to the Reb system would be done for such shallow or selfish reasons! :pokey: .......you've not met any of us but if you had been around a bit longer you might have a better impression. I have probably met more UK members than anyone else here and have come to know people like Brian and Warren amongst several others pretty damn well....YOU'RE WRONG!
One minute you're on about friendly banter, making friends, the community, everyone having their say.......then thoughtless accusations like that that are doing nothing to help the situation.
Brian and Warren have been the backbone of the forum almost from day one...there's been little sign of any willingness from anyone else, definately not to anywhere near the levels of commitment they have shown. "Autocracy"...what you on about! ......again, if you'd been around here a bit longer I don't think you'd have made that comment Robbo especially baring in mind that you are only assuming what has happened to the Reps!!....you know what they say about assuming! :pistols:
That said yes it is an autocracy......this site exists because Ash (Spankme) put it together and takes the time to keep up the software and server maintenance side of things so ultimately he is the Boss guy and can pull the plug any time he sees fit!! (don't make any assumptions there guys, I'm not saying that he has been or will be pulling any strings round here just now)......as for the admins/mods, just a bunch of guys, no hidden agendas, just interested enough to try and do their best to make the site work and of interest/benefit to the most people possible.....fraid that means catering for the majority!!
As for the Rep Point topic........Reps were good now they aint!...at this point in time I don't particularly care...what's more important is how we're going to get everyone pulling for the same team again and close the ever increasing divide that is pulling the forum apart!
I won't bore you with the details of what the admin/mods have done/do around here but, without any bias, it's my opinion that the forum would never have achieved the popularity it has seen without them........and without them I think it would very quickly end up in the virtual gutter.
That's my 0.25p....the full 2p would take too long!

There is no hidden agenda and I'm not the one to decide where you should be in the scheme of things. There are reputation points for doing the right things for the collective benefit of the forum. Then there are reputation points for those who despise the people at the top who have done the right things for the forum and do their very best to remove those who deserve it the most from the top 10.
Do you really blame people for getting pissed about that? Why do forum members scheme together the displace those at the top who have made the most contribution? They should all be FUCKING ashamed of themselves. I agree its fun to play within the confines of friendship and site banter but to take it to the 'nth degree with all of the comments being made above is just totally against what this reputation system is for. YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Best policy would be let the dust settle, make some decent posts for everyones benefit and be proud of the points you earn for real.

I think its just our competitive nature, but we Brits never actually win, but we put up a good fight.
Don't know about the US but unless you are very lucky, life is a fight to live here. Very hard work, lots of rules and regulations, high taxes, very high cost of living, crime, poor healthcare, poor schools, poor government, so maybe we are now too used to fighting to live.

Evening all,
Firstly let me start by saying thanks for reinstating the reputation system. I am sorry if my comments were found to be offensive, however I was very aggrieved that my inital post had been misconstrued, I honestly wanted to know how the system worked, just like how the names change depending on how many posts have made.
However from there it escilated into a more serious debate, especially after the recent reputation abuse headlines. I think in the wake of that news the air was overdue for being cleared.
I want to be an active member in this community, I want to get involved, and I want to continue to enjoy the time that I spend daily on this website.
I'm glad the reputation system has returned, I think it provides a great tool for rewarding people for living upto site expectations, and does provide a good judge of character, you have to either be popular or clever, same as people succeed in real life.
I would like to thank admins for their reversal of this decision, I may of been out of turn with you guys but you will have to sypathise with my disappointment the least us guys expect to know from you administrators is when your going to make changes that affect us all, especially on such a topical area.
I respect you are the largest fish in the tank, however you would have to respect there are lots of small fish, and I would love for us to all go back to swimming happily together again, and stop the all the fin nipping.
Thanks for reading

OK, here's an idea (not sure if it's feasible):
I'll admit I was pissing the rep system about, but once the request to stop went up on the home page, I did. Nevertheless it seems not everyone did. So, obviously the rep comments do need to be policed, but it's not fair or practical to expect Admins to do it. So, why don't we all do it? If it could be possible to read each other's rep comments that ought to stop the abuse, no?
(BTW, I asked to have my points cleared over 2 weeks ago specifically to avoid a bunfight like tonight's.)

Could be something to that. I think one of the biggest problems in the US is complacency. Many of us are so fat and comfortable that the things we complain about are Suzuki's Adveratizing campaign.

I dont want to get involved in all this shit, but...
way back when the rep system was first introduced I will admit that me and sv1000sbiker andy were the first people to start giving each other points, and from what he told me, he and brian were exchanging aswell to knock skidz of the top as this really annoyed him, this did seem like great fun at the time, but bloody hell look what it has turned into. I did spend a short time at the top of the rep list and this was when I showed my photos of my sv1000rr and got loads of points, aswell as doing the usa members map, but at the end of the day I dont really care where I am on the list aslong as we are all getting on well and discussing what we all love most, motorcycling!!

How about deleting this whole thread and Robbo, starting a new thread entitled "How does the reputation system work", and Bjam replying with the guidlines. Just a thought.
Sorry Robbo.
Cheers.
Adam
I would give me great pleasure to put a nail in the coffin of this thread, however I would like to know that there was no ill feeling lingering when the lid is closed. I think this should run it's course for a little longer so that everyone can have some closure. If any repercussions occur from this I will be happy to bear the brunt, I feel that I have been a major contributory factor in this momentary rift.
I will be more than happy to start a new thread, and something along the lines of Chewys older replies would answer question precisely. I am sorry for asking an awkward question at a bad time, and for it spiralling out of control.

So, at long last, here is the answer you have all been waiting for:
How the Reputation System Works . . .
Register Date Factor
For every 183 number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power
Post Count Factor
For every 400 number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Reputation Point Factor
For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Minimum Post Count
How many posts must a user have before his reputation hits count on others? 10
Minimum Reputation Count
How much reputation must a user have before his reputation hits count on others? 0
Daily Reputation Clicks Limit
How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period? 10
Reputation User Spread
How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again? 3
My current reputation power = 11 points per click
1 to start with
2 for over 366 days
7 for 2800 posts / 400
1 for current reputation at 193
So each time I give reputation I increase their count by 11 points.
Hope this makes sense. Now you can all go to sleep happy with the knowledge.

I see your point Adam and maybe better guidelines are needed here and there but I think this thread has been useful, not as Robbo intended but all the same something to be learned from all this by most if not all of us.
As far as i can see andyw seems we have all been sensible about this thread very little blaspheming has gone on here and the few that did removed it under the edditing option so respect to them for that, And as i said before in this thread sometimes when i post something it does not read the way i`d like to think i had said it.LOOK at page one of the thread and it looks like i started this now feeling guilty about the way this has gone anyway looking forward to the weekend to see you all.

Yeah, I just been watching Biker Boyz!
Actually (and oddly enough for me - on topic) the ONLY negative rep point I have ever gave was to a punk that was rattling on about Biker Boys and such films. Arguing that they were great movies and that Europe just didn't understand the US culture and what bitchen' cool people we all were.
I was totally embarrased as an American. This IS a great place, and I AM happy and proud to be a citizen, and our culture IS different than the UK.
But this kid was projecting the misconception that we are all Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days, and Biker Boyz!
I felt like takin' the Camaro out to the 7-11, buying a case of Budweiser, a five-gallon-bag of Dorito's and a copy of Hustler, and chokin' down a few brewski's on my way back to the trailer-park.
Dagnabbit! Homer, what did yer kid Bart do with my copy of the Illiad? :ranting:

I personally think that most of your posts are worthy of rep points :killingme , but im not going to be so generous any more, so your going to have to make something...

As far as I know the 4 green 'blobs' mean they have 400+ rep points. A certian person has jumped from around 200 to 400 just today.....he must have put a Honda v5 Alex Barros engine into his SV overnight to deserve all them :supsmiley

I got up to 4 blobs yesterday, with 300 points, and was on the top, so some people jumped over 100 points in 10 minutes last night to get 5 blobs.
I think there is either work being done to the system and its a glitch, or there was some serious rep abuse whilst they wer'nt even online. hehe.
Ive had 2 rep awards from the SV Admin Team recently, but as they have only done 1 post, they have no power and the points arn't worth anything...But thanks anyway, whoever gave them.
Cheers

There appears to have been a seismic shift over the last 24 hours. Same people are there but the blob count has changed a bit.
I appear to have had rep from the Admin team according to mu user CP, but the point count has not changed and when i look at the post for which it was supposedly given, my rep is even.
How strange.

Hey, I have a quick question here anbout the rep system. Green is good rep, and silver is bad rep, no? Looking over my rep stuff (amazing the things you can find when you're bored), I noticed that all the comments left were positive, but on two of the little 'dots' next to it were silver instead of green. Now, judging by the comments directly with it, I can't imagine they meant to leave it as 'negative' rep... but it appears that it is? Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks

The silver dot just means that the person or persons that gave you rep points have no points or negative points themselves.
Now, I'm smelling the destinctive smell of dog shit. I think the pooch and done a no-no :bash: Must go clean up now
