I don't really care about adding a couple of horse power, the stock SV1000 comes with enough hp for me! What I do want to change is the sound. For those of you who have done the modifications to the stock pipe, are you doing it just for a quick fix? Have you run into any problems at all with bike performance? Would you suggest a re-map if you were to keep the modified pipe on the bike long term? Alternatively, anybody have any suggestions for cheap aftermarket pipes in the US that will improve the sound (although not to deafening db, and don't care much about performance increase, just not performance decrease)? Anybody still have some used pipes for sale?

Here's what I did....and performance has not suffered at all. 1) Popped the polished caps off. 2) Cut pea shooter pipe as far as possible. 3) Drilled 8 1/2" holed around inner pipe...started with smaller holes and worked my way up. 4) Painted inner cap and pipe with flat black (high temp)paint. 5) Screwed polished caps back on. 6) Started bike and woke up family.

For a quick fix, this is about as easy as it comes...IMO. Oh, and on decel I do not get a whole lot of popping or backfiring...a little, but that is what I want.

Thanks for the info, sounds easy enough. A couple more questions if you have time: How much louder are the pipes? Is the paint just so you cannot easily see the removed peashooter? Do you think this modification without rejetting would void the warranty? Thanks again.

They are definitely louder, but not obnoxious. Not sure what to compare them to...but I think you'll be pleased. Yes, the paint is to hid the innerds a little more. I HIGHLY doubt this would void the warranty, and since the SV is fuel injected, there isn't any re-jetting to be done....just re-mapping, which isn't necessary for this mod. Enjoy!

I put aftermarket cans on my bike and didn't remap!

Runs as good as it did before! I plugged the PAIR valve with a bearing so I don't get that dreaded popping and banging!

I paid 670.00 for a pair of titanium Micron cans. They are Mellow until you tell them to be loud! It's all up to what your right wrist wants!!! I have heard modified stockers and they sound ok, but no where as Ducatiesqe as the Microns!

Good luck!

I took cans off and removed stock catalyst inside, took a #6 rebar and beat out baffles from both ends of the cans, then I drilled twelve 1/4" holes around the pea shooter. I reinstalled the cans. Now I sound like a V-twin should, not a sewing machine. p.s. gutting the insides helped performance, I drilled the holes several months later for sound. :supsmiley

Bob speaketh the truth. I did the same mod and it sounded great and NO remapping required. But I just HAD to get aftermarket cans and the bike ran like shit from then on until I bought a PCIII. Which was still a waste of money becuase I had five fail on me. And dyno time ain't cheap either.

Just my 2 cents
