I have succesfully changed my stock exhaust into a two into 1 exhaust. I first removed the crossover section and then cut the pipe right where the pipe exits to the left pipe. Then I crimped the pipe and welded the crimp. The distance from the head to the muffler is almost identical on both exhaust tubes and they both go into the same pipe just like a 650. It has the stock muffler and it sounds a little louder. It rides the same with no hint of a loss of performance gain but it does weigh a little less and I can now buy a single gsxr bolt on for cheap and still have the cool sounds.

My only question Why? Don't you know you are just chocking the motor. All the 2-1 exausts for V-twins have conclusive results of giving less HP, or the same HP for a few shedded pounds.
Personaly i think it looks better with one can and yes less weight, looking at this a lil more i might consider upping the pipe size on the right side

The only real reason that I made this mod is to make my bike look different than all the rest and I saved a butt load of money. If it makes 3-8 less horsepower that's probably not used much anyway, then it will still have more power than the blue or silver SV'S! LoL! No Seriously! I just like to tinker and it's really people like me who invent all the stuff that you pay big bucks for. I like to see what I can do with minimal help and a lot of ingenuity. :cool2:

Sounds good to me, much how i think (dare yaa too be different) besides i cant see it loosing horsepower just will change how bike will react at different rpms.....

I am going to build a new exhaust after looking at all the comercial products. I am pretty decent at welding and manufacturing things.I have all the tools I need at my job,Mig,Tig,Arc,Plasma cutter, Machine shop all at my disposal during my lunch time or after work. So that looks like the plan. I think if I do that I can get maximum performance with little $$$$$. The stock two into one consists of cutting the extra exhaust off and clamping the metal then welding it closed. The cross over pipe acts as the travel route for the other header to empty into the now main exhaust. :msn-wink:

Are you doing the welding while the pipe is mounted to the bike? If not it would be great to see some pics of the weld job with the pipe removed.

First off, I want to say that I do not mean this in a mean way at all, but...
Speaking on the basis of all I have learned in having stock, rs3 bolt ons and 2-1 3/4 system and attempting to tune the bike, I applaud you for your effort, however I am certain your bike will lose power dramatically midrange and above. The bottom end may perform better, (I doubt it though). I bet you will have that thing off faster than the time you wasted in creating it.

Maybe we sjould all pool together to get help him pay for a dyno run. I am always up for some cheap entertainment:)

Man! You are bad! (I'm just jabbing ya...)
Sometimes great results will be found if you crash and burn a couple of times.
You gotta start somewhere....I remember people telling me I should polish my intake runners nice and shiny.....I never did...

Wouldnt it be cheaper and easier just to make a block off plate for the left side just to see what might happen first just a thought besides look at that crappy stock exhaust anyhow another thought will iam here take a look how aftermarket harley exhausts are built why not apply some off there ideas to build a exhaust for these bikes. The funny thing about this is if he does gain or doesnt he got the look he wants besides for myself to spend over $2000 for the look of the single exhaust just isnt right, hope someone figures out how to make some better horsepower out of these bikes soon it feels like a sport bike risers are very low just doesnt go............

:bleh: I just figured that one cylinders exhaust is heading down the tube when the other one opens so it's not like they are fighting for space in the exhaust tube. A gsxr1000 has one exhaust and it's not hurting for power.I figured that it's displacement is about the same or a little more and the exhaust tube that goes into the bolt on is roughly the same size as what is on my two into one.Although a Hayabusa comes with duals the one thing that a lot of people do is to change into a four into one on it. I have a friend with a totally tricked out hayabusa and he has atwo into one on his. It made a few less ponies on the dyno but when he put the power commander and the bmc on, It was making over 30 more than stock and 27 more than with an exhaust alone. You all are right and convention says that I will lose horsepower. I rode it yesterday and it feels like the low end is way stronger and the top end doesn't have a rush but I short shift it anyway and it is always pulling in the powerband. It was too cold to really get on it but I do get full power wheelies with no bouncing or throttle chopping or clutching. I am 6ft, 190lbs and it has no problems with me. I will probably change it eventually and I will go to a yosh 3/4 system but for now this is it. :punk:

Interesting mod, and when you consider how narrow the pipe is because of the sizeable crimp in the left pipe where it wiggles its way around the swingarm and footrest, it may not flow that much less gas anyway.
Fluid dynamics are a strange business and whilst I understand the intuitive feeling that the exhaust gases will have less 'room to move' with just one pipe, the general assumption that having one pipe will slow you down obviously hasn't worried Aprilia, of course I realise that was designed as a one pipe sysytem and not altered from twin pipes, but all the same I have to wonder about what the dyno would say, (if it ever gets asked).

Aprilia has gone back to the 2 can system on the new Factory bike.
It's going to be a trade off....The V-Twin makes decent torque downstairs, but if you want more HP upstairs, you will need 2 cans. We all know that a 2 into 1 system provides enough backpressure, to increase low end torque, but if you plan to install bumpier cams, you will want to go with a 2 can system.
I posted an explaination somewhere around on this site before...it's all just sound waves to me...
