Running Hot

Between this thread, the octane usage thread and a few others I have read on the site (awesome site IMHO) I am a little concerned. I am leaning very strongly towards buying an SV1000S within the next month or so. My concern is that we are entering the hottest part of the year where I live (Arizona). Ambient air temperature is predicted to top 100F on Monday and it will only go up from there. The month of June is when we see our highest temps, as high as 120F on some afternoons, but the temps will tend to stay at or above 90F from now until after Laborday weekend. I am concerned about breaking in a new motorcycle engine in this environment commuting to and from work in stop and go traffic. Would I be better served by riding the bike out on the highway on the weekends and using my car for the commute? I would have to ride up significant elevations to lower the temps to bearable. Will the added stress of climbing the hills hurt the new motor?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Glenn

I don't think abiant air temperature matters to much to a modern engine. If it's designed to stay under 110c, it will stay under 110c. I don't see why that would effect the break in, as long as your oil holds up.

There are some other riders in Arizona and they have reported no problems with the bike overheating.

The service manual says the thermostat valve opens between 86.5-89.5 C (188-193 F). Before this the coolant doesn't even go round the radiator. The cooling fan kicks in around 100-104 C (212-219 F). The highest temperature I've seen registered is 109C (228F)that was back in the summer stuck in traffic. Once on the move again it dropped back to high 80's low 90's

Runs steadily at 87-88C on the motorway, went up to 91 on the Nurburgring in 27C heat 2 weekends ago, but never goes above 90 commuting in/around London (with a lot of standing time). Never seen 100+C in my 5 weeks of ownership!

Love my bike

Here in MN during the Hot And Humid season I have hit 230 during 1 hour stop and go comutes.

I find that an old trick I used with my beater cars work- pull in the clutch and rev it to around 5 grand for 5 sec. Faster circulating fluid with no load pushes that green stuff through the rad faster. It'll drop around ten degrees.

But if I forget to do this no worries. I she starts to knock and loose power- then I would freak.

Nothing like that has happened yet though. Manual says your safe til 243.

In centigrade it's 86 normal going up to about 100 - 105 max as the fan kicks in. Fast crusing, 120- 130 mph in a hot climate will keep it at around 92 ish.

Highest i ever saw was 116 whilst stuck in traffic in Liverpool...

214F isn't anything to worry about, I hit 220 or higher when I'm stuck in traffic on hot days, the fan kicks in and the temp goes back down and everything is good. The bike won't overheat and loose power/shutoff until around 255-260F, found that out one day when my radiator fan got broken
