I've had my SV for 2 1/2 mos. & here in S. Calif. it can get pretty warm during the summers. Luckily I live in a coastal area (10 miles in) & "hot" is mid-to-upper 90's.
I do a lot of street riding & the temp these past coupla months is often 200 - 220 in heavy traffic. It cools down pretty quickly but it averages 198 - 212. Is there reason for concern? If so, is there something I can do about it? Thanks |

Honestly this has to be the 100th thread on running temperature. I've seen mine rise several degree's just following a car (less air flow). This Fall while riding in near freezing temps I laughed while watching the temp. move up and down constantly while the thermostat open and closed. The sensor is that sensitive. If your sitting at a light and feel it's getting too hot you can reach down (with a gloved finger) and stick your finger tip into the fan to see if it's spinning, if not give it a spin to make sure it's free. It's almost a shame Suzuki even put the read out on the dash, it freaks owners out too much.
Imagine how hot air cooled cycles get!

Has anyone had their bike boil over?
Has anyone had any damage due to overheating? Are the stock suzuki plastic schrader valve caps good enough, or should I get a set of colored anodized aluminum ones? Or perhaps some chrome skull caps? http://savannahnow.com/diversions/im...full_chop3.jpg

funny after spending $20 on overpriced valve caps, someone then had to buy a $2000 camera with macro lens kit to take a photo of it
heeheI was in a 200+ bike ride, and in the final section while travelling 40kph followed by stationary crawl to park up, the temp kept climbing, just sitting there idling, I was watching for the fan the whole time and no go... it hit 120degC and the FI light came on, checked the fan again, no go, look back at gauge and 121 became 122, switched off, and walked the bike the final 10m. Didn't see any coolant pour out (overflow bottle at halfway when cold before ride). The radiator cap is 1.1bar so shouldn't spit too much. I'll be investigating why the fan didn't come on, but also fitting the manual switch as I had on the TLS, makes life much nicer. |

My gauge constantly fluctuates from 185 to 192ºF while riding on open roads, and fan kicks in right at 220ºF. That's A LOT IMHO, especially for hot climates like TX. I wish it had TWO fans, rather than one; too little for a 1K motor in hot weather (100ºF) IMHO. Oh well. Good day guys.

Elp, try using water wetter and no coolant it really keeps the temp. down.

Quote:
The service manual says the thermostat valve opens between 86.5-89.5 C (188-193 F). Before this the coolant doesn't even go round the radiator. The cooling fan kicks in around 100-104 C. The highest temperature I've seen registered is 109C that was back in the summer stuck in traffic. Once on the move again it dropped back to high 80's low 90's see this thread for fan inspection/testing temperature related links here Cheers Bish

You could fit an early TLS thermo, mine opened at 65c. I think it was.
I had to tape the radiator during cold weather rides. I think i will.

Running Temps
What are some of you guys showing for running temps? I'm about 190 while cruising but have been in the 240's while idling in traffic. This in 70-80 degree weather.

This might help
Check out this thread http://www.sv-portal.com/forums/show...ht=engine+temp

+1 240 is a bit high. If romping mine or stoplight to stoplight it'll hit 220. Normal riding it sits steady at 195.

Reach in and try to spin the cooling fan to see if it is jammed would be a good first step. Probibally mentioned somewhere in that thread listed above.

Thanks for the heads up. Come to think of it, I haven't heard the cooling fan kick on yet.
