I'm optimistic that eventually one of the Japanese manufacturers will make something similar at a more reasonable price.

The new BMW S1000R (the naked version) is supposed to be better, and quite a bit cheaper. The KTM is around £13k in the UK and the BMW starts just under £10K. The base model BMW is similar money to the new Kawsaki Z1000 over here!

Havent they already done this? Honda and Kawasaki both have upright riding position sportbikes or "streetfighter" class bike in the Kawi Z1000 and Honda CB1000R.

if you ignore the fact that those bikes aren't V twins, then yeah, I guess they have.

I never have liked the BMW. It sux. It is so plasticy, sounds raspy but in a bad way, and not to mention a good friend died on one up on a mountain near here a while back. I'd take the Kawi over the BMW any time of day.
However, the KTM has that great V-twin, which makes it waaaay better than either one...

MCN liked the new Ape V4R Tuono better than the 1290 for street use.

EXACTLY. I have nothing against inline fours, but they just don't have the character of a v-twin. Specifically the 90-degree style of v-twin. But I don't think one of the Japanese companies will make one. The TL1000 didn't sell well, nor did the SV1000, nor did Honda's VTR or RC51. Most sportbike riders are young, and are heavily influenced by spec sheets, if one bike is 1/10 of a second quicker around a racetrack, they want it, even if a competitor's bike would be far more fun or more comfortable or more whatever. Now if Suzuki made a twin that could compete with the CBR1000 on the track, and they CALLED it a GSXR, they might actually sell some, but they won't do that. I went riding with two buddies yesterday, who both have CBR1000s. Their bikes are faster, but I guarantee my SV is more fun overall, just maybe not when you're tucking down and stretching the throttle cable.

You`ll find it`s a better class of people who own BMW motorcycles
