Well done Pete, and good luck going after the 9!
It does sound like something I'd like to see, haven't been to a drag race meet for yonks.
Good on you!

When I get the frame in a few weeks I'll post up some pics - basically it's gonna be an 1100 EV lump spun 90 degrees in the frame with separate gearbox and then either a turbo or supercharger bolted on + a bit of NOS.
Initially it'll run high octane fuel with a view to running Methanol later on.

Pete, if you don't mind helping out a newb I have a question for you.

First off I have been riding my 03 sv1000N for about 5 years now and I want to start drag racing it next year. It is mostly stock with exhaust, power commander, lowered, and sprockets.

My main question is what type of gearing is best for a mostly stock bike?

I'm guessing that 16-42 will be crossing the 1/4 mile at the top of 4th gear but it might be a little wheelie prone and one more shift.

I'm guessing that 17-40 or 17-39 will cross the 1/4 mile at the top of 3rd, one less shift and less wheelie prone.

So in your opinion what sprocket setup would be best for a stock swingarm sv?

Thanks
Ryan

Hi Ryan
I used stock gearing on my standard arm and found you either nailed it flat out in 4th at the quarter or snicked 5th early - not much difference on time either way. I got fed up with the wheelies & stretched it after only 30 runs & run a 42 rear which seems to work well.
If you really get your weight well forward a 42 tooth rear might help & strapping the front as well as lowering the forks thro yolks by about 35mm to leave just an inch of suspension travel not only further drops the front but stops any pogo tendancy if you do pull a wheelie.

Cheers Pete

Very interesting & expensive looking

I've just about finished building the Aprilia engined dragbike running a 48DCOE sidedraught weber & a seven inch slick - sadly the ignition wouldn't play ball last weekend at it's first meet - back pot lost its sparks.
I'll stick some pics up soon.
Guzzi project has taken a back seat until I get the Aprilia sorted & running NOS

I guess my gearing calculator is way off. Top of 4th with stock gearing sounds good. I'll save my 16-42 sprockets in case I get a new swingarm.

With your gearing, swingarm, and nos are you crossing the line at the top of 5th now?

Correct - now the choice is pull the redline in 5th on NOS (bit iffy) or click sixth 50 yds before the line.
Much depends on the launch & any terminal speeds 135mph + are generally in top gear.

At the Shepton Mallett Show yesterday I picked up a copy of the National Sprint Association Magazine. There was Peter on the front cover being a bit spectacular. Apparently the photo was taken before the front wheel reached maximum height. Good effort, Peter.
