Engine Breather Filter Failure

Been a while, but still been riding the old girl. Nearly at 200000km. Anyway, I was just doing my yearly major service and pulled the air filter out and discovered a heap of what i thought were bits of rubber in the airbox and everywhere. I was a little bit perplexed, so i went down to where i've got the spare bike stored to have a look at the other airbox and i discovered that there is meant to be a piece of foam where the engine breather connects to the airbox in the RHS corner of the airbox. It looks like mine has completely deteriorated and spread itself around the airbox and into the motor too i'd imagine.

Has anyone else seen this before?

I plan on just cleaning it out and running without the foam, might suck some more oil into the motor but not too much.

I had a similar incident some years ago on my 2003 SV which now has 50,000 miles. I opened up the air box so I could clean the filter and noticed what looked like a pile of mush in the corner. I cleaned it out an replaced it without incident.

Hey there ChopChop.... ha ha... didn't know we had another member in QLD...

That foam disintergrated many years ago on mine......i got a wad of that really course stainless scourer pad type stuff
and rolled it into a tight ball and jammed it in there. It is never going anywhere as it bites the plastic and take
a bit of pulling out.......

Keep the old girl going, she has a lot of life left in her.... This i know....

Good to know that i'm not alone. Mine was spread all around the airbox so i have to guess that some went into and through the engine. She still runs ok though so i'm not worried about it.

Valve clearances were good still. One intake will probably need doing next year maybe.

The motors are pretty solid if you exclude the stupidity of the generator magnets. I've only changed a thermostat, back wheel bearings (all) countershaft seal, pushrod seal and clutch and brake master pistons. I'm not meticulous on maintenance other than fresh fluids (all) and chain maintenance. Yearly valve clearance checks regardless of miles.

She does use a little oil but i think its the valve seals.

Never mind the gravel rash, she was a repairable write off.
