Some time back I purchased base and head gaskets form a 2014 DL1000 to investigate the possibility of using the 100mm bore cylinders on an SV1000. The gaskets showed me that a cylinder swap might be possible. I have been waiting around for a used set of cylinders to pop up somewhere to jump on them to try a swap.

Well I just got my hands on a set.

I took my SV1000 mock up engine I have here and was able to install the stock DL1000 piston and cylinder onto the cases.

The DL1000 100mm head gasket also lines up and should work!

This is pretty cool stuff, I have a set of 13.6:1 and 13.0:1 100mm JE pistons on my shelf!

Also what type of gain are you looking to achieve with this upgrade?

+2mm overbore kits w/o the expense of the over bore and plating. No more modifying stock gaskets to run with 100mm bore engines also.

Good work Mike!:) When these start showing up regularly on Ebay it looks like a good way to go when we need pistons the next time. Going from 996 to 1037 would bump up the torque a little for sure.

Yup, a bit of displacement and easier to get more compression in some cases too. I hope to assemble and measure the squish with the stock DL pistons, measure piston crown volume and total compression ratio for a base line to see where a direct swap puts you.

The stock piston looks to have a bit of a dish in the middle like they just extended the valve pockets across to the other side making like an inverted dome kind of thing. The Wiseco TL slugs seemed to measure a bit closer to the head maybe due to the pin location? Whatever the reason, it would take less machining on mine to get the squish down to around 1mm so the Wiseco's were a good move...and work great!!

Have you compared the Wiseco TL squish height to the JE's? I know the JE's offer quite a bit higher dome for maybe a full point more compression but I'm wondering if they require as much milling to set the squish? Will be interesting to read of your findings with the new DL jugs. Good work as always Mike!:)

Here is what I learned tonight. These are what I measured, use at your own risk

OEM 2014 DL1000 cylinder and piston on SV1000 cases using an SV1000 base gasket and the 100mm DL1000 head gasket would produce a 11.42:1 compression ratio. Higher than the SV1000 has now using the same measurement methods.

If I measure a stone stock 03-04 SV1000 I get 11.08:1
If I measure a stone stock 05 and up SV1000 I get 11.23:1
Compression was gained by a slight shift in pin to crown height
The 2014 DL1000 appears to have the same pin to crown height at the 03-04 SV1000.

The 2014 DL1000 base gaskets are about 0.002" thicker than the SV units. They are interchangeable it looks like.

With a custom thickness schmidt314 head gasket you would get about 11.76:1 compression ratio at 1mm squish.

Set squish to 1mm and mill the head a bunch and you can get 12.88:1

Use JE 100mm 13:1 pistons and set squish to 1mm you get 13.25:1

Now mill the head, set the squish to 1mm and use the 13:1 JE and you could achieve way above pump gas land. Easy to get 13.4:1 to easy 13.8:1

That is what I know!

I would use SV1000 base gaskets and the DL head gasket, or a custom gasket. There are many options of setting the squish to 1mm with gaskets and machining or combos. How ever you want.

Yes, if you use the 317205 JE piston and set squish you will be 13.25:1 by my calculations. My number are usually a bit low because I do not use spec piston crown volumes. I use liquid in the cylinder with piston down in the bore a bit, so a bit of volume is added due to volume from crown to the top rings.

13.25:1 is really close to what it would be with the custom gaskets.

Are the cylinders hard to come by? I would say yes for sure. I have been waiting for over a year to get set on eBay. More should be popping up as time goes on. I had to get the pistons and cylinders, as the seller would not split them so shipped I got 2 cylinders and 2 pistons for $280 I think. They will get cheaper, and it should come down to about $70 a cylinder I would hope.

New cylinders retail are $650 or there abouts each! Way cheaper to send and have bored and plated.

Do you still have your pistons?

Every time you post this stuff up I think about proceeding with building the SV1K engine and then I remind myself that I am planning on getting the new KTM Super Duke GT early next year and stop myself from doing anything further. If things fall through with that bike tho, I AM going to build this damn engine!

Every time you post this stuff up I think about proceeding with building the SV1K engine and then I remind myself that I am planning on getting the new KTM Super Duke GT early next year and stop myself from doing anything further. If things fall through with that bike tho, I AM going to build this damn engine!

My friend bought a 1290 Super Duke today. I let him ride my bike I build from boxes with a killer engine so he could ride a fun V-Twin. He now all of a sudden wanted a big sport twin.

You fellas really know your stuff, just a shame your across the pond, do you guys build engine for many forum goers or just for personal use
I do engine work for all kinds of folks. Friends, Local racers, some people on forums, I have done a few things for dealers, and others.

Guau. Good job! Would it be worth putting SV cylinder base gaskets on my 2016 DL? how much would the compression increase? I do not want a race preparation, only if the cylinder head is disassembled to prepare ducts, take advantage of it to improve slightly

If you were going to take it apart, I would mill and set the squish.
