I recently bought an 03 sv1000 and have riden it about 2000 km...i’m finding that in top gear i cant really seem to get over that 200 km/h mark, kind of lingers around 7500/8000Rpm anyone have some feedback on that?

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you may have smaller front and/or larger rear sprockets which enhance acceleration and roll-ons at the expense of top speed. This would be especially apparent if the the previous owner fitted a speedometer correction device to show the bike's true speed.

I highly doubt its a euro model but the sprocket question has crossed my mind because my speedometer has 10/12 kmh under actual radar speed but i have taken it into consideration in my 200kmh

What i dont get is that it rips through the gears pretty much hitting 11 000 rpm and then in top gear lingers around 8000rpm?

I'm not sure there's anything wrong. Peak horsepower is somewhere between 8 and 9 thousand so that's where the bike should be, right?

Look at Gearing Commander: https://www.gearingcommander.com/

Seems that your observations agree with the charts....so it's likely a matter of drag vs available power that's stopping you. Are you tucked down on the tank while doing this? If not...you should be if you expect to go faster because the drag increases at a non linear rate the higher the speed. Also was mentioned the max power on a stock SV1K is toward the upper 9 to low 10K range...and the tach's lie by about 10% high so 11K is really 10K or so.

Even if everything is good on the bike....most won't run out of revs in 6th unless their gearing has been altered. It's kind of like having overdrive with top speed achieved in a lower gear while 6th is to lower engine speed at cruise. Heck....mine is geared for 198 mph at redline! And it has no prayer in Hell of making it there so it's just a cruising-gas mileage gear for me.

I am tucked in at that point, and in reality the bike reaches this 190/200 kmh pretty quickly and then just kinda floats there...reminded me of my high hp 2 strokes when clutches just wouldnt grip enough at high rpm

I get 245kmh indicated top speed on mine....on std gearing

Euro spec bikes would be limited to max 299kmh so its not that..... (186mph)

Gearing shouldbe 17/40 standard.....the rear one is simple to check, the front will require removing the
sprocket cover....

I think it was France that had 99hp limiters on them through the ECU.

Yeah, thats right.....they also have a 186mph limit on vehicles too, i remember the Top Gear guys banging on about it.....
and i saw something on TV the other day where they were talking about it...so it must still be a thing....

I am so glad i dont live that over controlled arse of an area....:scooter:

I am from canada and my bike is canadian so if it was to be limited it would be at 299 kmh like other sport bikes...i would never get there because top speed on this bike is 243 kmh but i am really thinking that its a clutch problem or engine power loss because its should be able to push past the 8000 rpm at 200 kmh

What happens if you drop it a gear? Or....run each gear to redline is it only 6th that can't pull it? 8K is well below the power peak so 5th should bring up the revs and make more power so it should accelerate. If it's pulling strong and then stops pulling....there might be something going on. Are you still running the STV's? They would be how it would be speed limited if it were...and they run just fine with them removed. (hint--hint) :)

The STV is the secondary throttle butterflies.......

It seems strange that 6th is killing it....

Something is wrong: Gearing Commander says with stock gearing 4th should reach 223, 5th 252 each at redline. Got to remember the tach is lying to you! Subtract about 10% from the reading to get the actual engine rpm....so showing 11K redline is actually only 10K engine speed. But the numbers I just used ARE at 10K actual engine speed and tach showing redline so something isn't right here.

The clutch very well might be slipping once you reach that load point where 200 klicks supplies enough drag if you can't exceed that in 4th or 5th. Considering the age it's probably worth pulling the clutch for a look-see....and while you're in there delete the BTL (back torque limiter) as it's a bit wonky and could be what's causing the slippage if it's not advancing properly. It isn't really limiting the 'back torque' as they say, it's there to lighten the clutch pull by using weak clutch springs that are then compressed tighter when the BTL device advances to squeeze harder...but if it's stuck and not advancing then you're left with a weak clutch. Your suspicions that prompted this post in the first place may very well be correct!

it's about sprocket ratio. I wanted my N model to redline in 6th gear. stock ratio is 17/40 if i remember that long ago. so i changed to 16/43. bumps the rev limiter at just over 11k at 148mph on the gps, 152mph on the speedometer.
