I bought a SV650 for the engine to use on a minibuggy build. The guy that had it before me was running from the cops and wrecked it. Front end damage but motor sounded strong. I get the bike home and go to put water in the radiator and as fast as I added water it immediately filled the entire crankcase up. I found a missing freeze plug on one of the heads. One plug on each head was previously sealed up with JB weld. I replaced the other one in each head, certain that this had fixed the problem. Added water back to it and straight in the crank it goes. I double checked the 2 plugs that I replaced and they are still seated. Is there any other way water instantaneously mix with oil via some torn seal/ o-ring or am I probably looking at a crack in a head or cylinder wall. After all, it did run well before I found the problem but I've seen an engine run with a piston cracked in half. I'm really hoping someone will chime in and tell me that it is a bad water pump seal or something other than a busted engine. (fingers crossed)

Welcome to the site....

Not had much to do with the 650, but, yeah, water pump seal does sound possible, though generally the tell-tale on the front of the crankcase cover will dribble as well.
The fact that you found a freeze plug missing, after the idiot tried to outrun cops, suggests there coud be something deeper, as what was cooling the motor on this chase ?
Head gasket, cracked cylinder / head

I have seen several frozen SV650 and had to fix them in the case they were fixable.

Freeze plugs go fist so make sure both heads have had both plugs replaced and are properly sealed (total of 4)

I have also seen damage at the pumps, cracked cylinder, cracked crankcase cover, and cracked main engine cases.

Why have I seen this a bunch? I build and support a fair number of racebike SV650s. Rules only allow water for coolant. So if you forget and it is cold out or one year we had a massive cold snap, stuff was freezing in attached garages.

I pulled valve covers and made sure the freeze plugs were still sealed. Clutch cover is off at the moment. I bought a new mechanical seal but it's pouring is at such a rate I don't think that is the problem. If I plug both ports that feed water pump and pour water in the rad hose that should at least eliminate or confirm a hole somewhere in the head or case right? Any other methods of pinpointing where water is entering?

I think any idea is a good one at this point. Eliminating the water pump from the equtaion is a good start. Wan hile the cover is off, you MIGHT see where the water is running from if you can get soem light in there...not sure how much of the crankcase is visible on the sicfiddy

I have had the coolant disappear over the winter as well. I dont think its in my crank case. The oil level is spot on where I left it. It had 50/50 mix in it and I suspected the cooling system took too little and my reservoir was empty as well. I'll have to look and I'll see what's the matter.
