Why is the SV1000S so slow!

I'm sure I’ll generate a lot of ill feelings on this post. Don't get me wrong, I love my SV1000S and didn't regret purchasing it.

Here's the story....

I managed to hit 165mph on my bike last weekend. I had a GPS with me and it registered in at 141mph. This is the fasted that I've had my bike up to and it was topped out. I think the only thing holding me back a little was the fact that I was not able to fully tuck in due to my tank bag. Even if I was I don't think I would hit more than 145mph, true speed.

Before I go any further I must say that I only hit top speed runs about once every two months. I do this in is a secluded road far away from the city limits and you can see for miles. I'll make these runs where there are no cars on the road, early Sunday mornings. I realize that there is an inherent risk doing this, but I try to be as safe as possible.

I have done a lot of mods to the bike and my last dyno run produced 117hp and 73torque. With this kind of power I would expect to see higher top speeds. The last run that I did was a 638 ft above sea level on a cool day. I weigh 235 pounds with gear on, however, I have shed about 20 pounds of bike weight after my mods. I have actually read an article in one of the sport bike magazines that say larger rides can sometimes reach higher speed than lighter rides when they tuck in as it helps remove the void between the rider and the wind screen, less of a wind vortex.

Since the last dyno run I have made some other mods to the bike. They include a BMC filter, lifted tank and snorkel removed. I do plan to have it remapped here in a couple of weeks.

I look at the current production of 600's out there and they are able to achieve high speeds than my bike, not to mention the 1000cc class bikes. So why is my top speed so low? Is it the lack of a RAM air induction or even full fairings? I do have a 16T on the front sprocket and when at top speed I'm about 1000rpm's away from my redline.

Any well thought out responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rocket 6R

Oh yeah!
I remember that one. There is also a good bugs bunny bit where he gets picked up by gangsters who tell him to shaddap and he goes into a long winded ramble about how his very good a being quiet and how he doesnt keep on talkin after someone tells him to shaddap and eventually the gangsters have to tell him to "shaddap shutting up!"

Now isn't your life a little richer now.

I remember that one too! :killingme Now those were funny, politically incorrect cartoons where lots of the characters smoked and "woopins" were commonplace. :killingme
sorry you're disappointed about the top speed of your SV. My last new Suzuki in 1980 would do better. Now that I'm 50 though, I'm content with the fact that I can still ride and walk a wheelie with this tractor on the freeway at 80. Long live my SV.:niceone:

Who claims this? Sounds a little off to me...

It was in a reputable UK bike mag, think it was Ride, or Bike, about 2 years ago, and it said the 3rd quickest roll on bike on the road!

Anyhow, I don't hink my SV would pull top gear to redline(stock) unless the hill was steep enough. But I would also rather have the SV for thrusting out of turns and fairly easy (shifting wise) backroad sessions. It handles those much better than top speed runs, thats just a V-Twin sportbike for ya...
I can get the redline, and limiter at in all gears, apart from 6th. The limiter comes in at 12.5k
Lighten up guys, it's horses for courses.

Some people here are having a go at the originator of this thread, just because he was a little more from his bike.

The SV is a lovely bike, some people want a bit more!

I have that little bit extra now, but I probably would still be on the SV had i not killed it, but in my opinion it could do with a bit more 'up top'!

As for the reason, aerodynamics, probably.

Maybe the euro version is a rocket according to Sport Rider magazine

http://sportrider.com/bikes/146_perf_nums/

Either way, it goes fast enough to keep me happy and getting to that speed is enjoyable and reliable.

Bad idea. Stock SV pistons are too soft. A few have blown up their SV's with NOS.

Hey Taxman, are you saying the tach is off buddy? Never heard of that before. I've heard not being able to keep up in 1st gear or so, but never been off. So that means that the SV doesn't rev to 11K? Has anybody used a digital tachometer to confirm that? Just curious.
JC

I believe true max revs are 10000,but shown as 11000:shock: I seem to remember someone saying Suzuki did it to the TL as well?

According to MCN the new R6 only revs to something like 16500 (I think) not the 18000 odd promised.

A bit deceitful these Japanese :ranting:

Snorkle out of airbox, Yosh 3/4 system, 16T front sprocket and PC3USB got 172 indicated today. Should get about 2 more mph with a dyno tune/remap...

Wow that's screaming on an SV, how accurate is the speedo at that speed though??

Which map is in the PC now? Did you get redline in 6th?

Glad the cops didn't nail ya..

Top speed is really insignificant on real world rides. I hold Sunday rides two or three times a month. Most of the guys I ride with have sportbikes. We never do top speed runs. Why? It's too damn dangerous.

Acceleration, on the other hand, is an important factor. Acceleration is based on one's power-to-weight ratio. All of us "Sunday Drivers" prize excellent acceleration, but rarely use top speed.

Top speed is for bragging rights. Acceleration is for passing the guy ahead of you.

Best wishes,
Dave

Err, not strictly true, depends if you are on full chat already...then you ain't gonna pass no one!

Also if you are over 7,000 rpm you aint gonna out accelerate shit!

It must be your gearing as to why you top speed is low Had mine on the Dyno and got a genuine 130mph in 3rd speedo was only 2mph out I have hit 161mph on the road no 600s have come past me and in the midrange leave em for dust:banana:
Trev please let me know where you got yours dyno`d as i only live up the road to you ( brackley )and i have the same problem of the speedo way out and also struggle to get mine over 140mph. Not that i need to but i wander if something is maybe not quite right ???

do you have power commander fitted and many more mods to the stock bike ??

SVlee
I have hogged out short slip ONS and a minus one front which is a 16 and + 2 in the rear which I think is either 42 or 44 sprocket anyways it's -1 tooth over stock in the front plus two teeth in the rear and I've had my sv1000s up two 167 and 6th about a thousand RPM from redline and it did it quick and smooth
